Baking Fall Dessert Recipes

Fall dessert baking is probably one of my favorites! It is a whole mood and the cozy setting just gets me feeling warm inside as I bake special food for those I love. Not to mention, being able to open the windows. It’s just dreamy!

Fall is the perfect time to learn new skills you can incorporate in your baking. Things like sourdough, new techniques, and experimenting with ingredients.

Several of the recipes I share (not all of them!) incorporate sourdough. I love the element of flavor and moisture that sourdough brings to fall dessert recipes. If you are unfamiliar with sourdough- there is no better time than now to learn how!

dehydrated sourdough starter

You can check out this post to learn all about how to make your own sourdough starter or purchase a starter from our Etsy shop here!

Each of these recipes can be made using active dry yeast. I will leave the conversions with you in each recipe here!

My Favorite Fall Dessert Recipes

1. Sourdough Cinnamon Swirl Bread

Sourdough cinnamon swirl bread is a quick, sweet bread that can be made with discard or active starter. You don’t need much skill to master this delicious bread! No fermentation or extra rise time is required.

Make it non-sourdough: Substitute the sourdough starter with 1 tsp dry yeast in 1/2 cup warm water.

2. Apple Cinnamon Rolls

These dry yeast apple cinnamon rolls are fall dessert perfection! Chewy, buttery rolls filled with apples, cinnamon, and topped with a creamy frosting. Click here to get the recipe!

3. Sourdough Pumpkin Bites

Sourdough discard pumpkin bites are baked donuts made with pumpkin and topped with powdered sugar! Like the taste of pumpkin but not pumpkin spice? Skip the pumpkin spice and you’ll be loving these!

Make them non-sourdough: Use 1 tsp dry yeast instead of sourdough discard.

4. Fall Dessert Coffee Recipes

These fall coffee recipes might as well be dessert! At home coffees made with cozy season in mind but friendly on your budget. Try these recipes here!

5. Pumpkin Shaped Artisan Bread

Learn how to make a pumpkin shaped loaf of bread with or without pumpkin purée! If you want dessert, try it with added pumpkin or simply learn the art of this easy, step by step pumpkin shaped loaf.

6. Sourdough Apple Cinnamon Muffins

These apple cinnamon muffins made with sourdough discard and natural sugar is your new favorite guilt free dessert! Processed sugar free and all the benefits of sourdough. Click here to try out this recipe!

Make it non-sourdough: Use equal parts milk instead of warm water. Leave off sourdough starter.

7. Apple Pie: Made with Natural Sugar

Another natural sugar favorite is this homemade apple pie recipe! The all-time favorite fall dessert but without all the junk. This pie tastes so good you would never know it’s not sugar!

8. Pumpkin Cinnamon Oatmeal Bake

This dual purpose breakfast or dessert combines the flavors of pumpkin and cinnamon to bring you the taste of fall perfection! Use it for a delicious breakfast in the morning. Heat it up and serve with ice cream for the perfect fall dessert! Get the recipe here.

9. Classic Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting

This all season favorite is especially cozy in the fall season! Make this classic fall dessert with yeast or sourdough starter using this recipe. Click here to get the recipe!

Fall Dessert Baking Essentials

Setting the mood, sharing your fall desserts, and enjoying every moment is what fall baking should be about! Here are my go-to essentials for a cozy fall baking experience….

Setting the Mood for Baking Fall Desserts

As I said before, fall baking is a mood all on her own! As a busy mom and homemaker, I enjoy slowing down my pace and romanticizing these cozy days a bit. Here’s a few ways I set the mood in my kitchen for an enjoyable baking experience….

  • Cozy music.
  • Baking by candlelight or dim lighting in the evening.

Check out these lovely, natural candles from Sweet Water Decor at Amazon!

  • Using Bakeware I love like my Cast Iron Dutch Oven.

Sharing the Love

Sharing my fall desserts with friends and family is the best feeling! My love language is good. If I make you a fall dessert- I’m saying “I love you” in my simple way!

I have learned that food gifting is an art! Not just the food, but the packaging matters. It takes it from “Here’s some cookies” to “Here’s a gift”.

Here are some things I like to keep on hand for cozy season gift giving….

  • To-go coffee cups to share my dessert coffees with friends.
  • Food gift boxes
  • Adding finishing touches like this adorable fall ribbon, labels, or washi tape!

Ingredients the Give Back

Another reason I enjoy baking fall recipes is by using ingredients that give back. Finding healthy ingredients that taste great and give back by making my health better, not worse. Thrive Market helps me shop ingredients that not only taste great, but are good for my body.

Things like organic pumpkin purée from trusted companies, unbleached flour and parchment paper, non-seed oils, and so much more!

Baking healthy doesn’t have to be boring or expensive when you shop this delivered to your door grocery store. Thrive offers thousands of products from companies dedicated to bringing your family the best and nothing less. Use my link to shop and get $60 in free groceries!

I hope you enjoyed these fall dessert recipes and that you get to bake all the things this cozy season! Be sure to follow along for more recipes, homemaking, and seasonal living.

The Best Sugar Alternatives for Apple Pie

Healthy apple pie and other desserts don’t have to skimp on quality or taste. Finding a balance and getting a feel for the best sugar alternatives will help give you a baseline for turning all your favorites into healthier, better tasting recipes.

Here’s what you need to know….

Cane sugar. Organic cane sugar is my go to, one for one processed sugar alternative. While some brands still process it (adding other flavors, preservatives, and additives) some brands choose to keep quality in and preservatives out.

My friends at Thrive Market have several great options when it comes to a cane sugar with quality ingredients you can count on!

Click Here to Shop and Save!

Honey. Honey is one of my favorite processed sugar substitutes because it’s so nutritious. You can easily begin with a one for one ratio. However, the best ratio I have found is a bit less than one part honey for every one part sugar. Meaning, if the recipe calls for 1 cup sugar I will use about an 1/8th less. This is due to the robust taste of the honey that can easily take over.

Maple Syrup. Maple syrup is another great sugar substitute. Because of the robust taste I like using maple syrup in the place of brown sugar.

Brown coconut sugar. Another great alternative for brown sugar is brown coconut sugar. It’s distinct taste and texture adds to any processed sugar free recipe!

These sugar replacements are the purest form of natural sweeteners. You also have stevia, monk fruit, and others. However, I find that these can also be processed and have additives. They are also more expensive when buying from quality brands.

Mixing Sugar Alternatives

Another great way to achieve similar, or better, results when baking with natural sugar substitutes is to mix different kinds together. Honey and maple syrup combined mimic the flavor of any recipe calling for white and brown sugar. Honey and brown coconut sugar create a robust flavor for things like cookies while also giving you that granulated texture.

The best way to find your favorite mixture is to start playing with your own recipes. Start with one for one of any natural substitute and go from there!

Healthy Crust for Apple Pie

What better way to elevate your healthy apple pie even further than making a sourdough crust! This sourdough pie crust recipe is simple. With all the added benefits of fermentation and probiotics, plus the flavor- you will only be wanting healthy apple pie from now on! Click here to get the recipe for sourdough pie crust.

Apple Pie Ingredients

Making apple pie with only natural sugar is so simple. A few of the ingredients may be more expensive and harder to source but the extra effort is well worth it! Here’s what you’ll need….

  • 2 pie crusts, store-bought or homemade.
  • 4-6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced.
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2-3 tsp brown coconut sugar, optional
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Finding these ingredients from brands you can trust doesn’t get easier than Thrive Market! This ship to your door grocery store makes finding quality, organic, preservative free pantry staples so simple. I get all our maple syrup, brown coconut sugar, and cane sugar from Thrive + SO MUCH MORE! They have great deals on pantry staples, snacks, beauty, and cleaning products. Think everything you would get at your grocery store- but better for you! Use my link below to get a free gift of up to $60 in groceries when you join for just $5 a month!

Equipment You Need

While you do not need anything super special to make this simple recipe, there are a couple things that make it more convenient….

Food processor or blender. A food processor or blender will help blend down the squash so it isn’t too stringy or gritty. If you do not have a food processor check out the link here. You can also use an electric hand mixer but it will be a bit stringy/chunky.

Dutch oven. A Dutch oven makes it easy to make this soup while keeping the temperature controlled during the process of making it/serving it. Plus, it just looks pretty! Check out this one on Amazon or use a large stock pot instead.

How to Make Butternut Squash Soup

Making creamy butternut squash soup is so easy. Follow this uncomplicated process for best results…

  • Cut the top off your squash and slice down the middle. Remove the seeds and strings from the inside of the squash.
  • Add seasoning and rub into the uncooked squash.
  • Bake at 400 degrees F for 45 minutes to an hour or until a fork can be placed into the center and it feels tender.
butternut squash and herbs
  • When it is tender, remove from the oven and allow to cool for several minutes. Scrape the squash away from the skin carefully and add to a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth.
  • In a Dutch oven or large stockpot bring 2 cups of chicken broth to a boil. Add in the squash a few spoonfuls at a time. Add heavy cream and heat over medium heat.
  • Bring mixture to a simmer and add milk. You can taste test and add any seasonings to taste.

Serving & Side Ideas

Creamy butternut squash soup can be served many ways. Served alone it makes a delicious soup, however it lacks in protein. If this is a concern you can serve over chicken or your protein of choice. Add cheese or bacon to the top.

It is also well served with a bread side to dip! Try one of our bread recipes with yours…

6 Easy Breakfast Ideas You Can Make From Scratch

September 4, 2025

Need some quick and easy breakfast ideas? Try out these completely from scratch meals you can make fresh to prep for breakfast all week long. Get all the inspiration in this post…..

How to Make Easy Breakfast a Success Every Time

Making breakfast from scratch became a goal as my children started to eat solids. I also noticed my need as a pregnant mom for a protein packed, easy breakfast on the daily. However, as a busy mom of three young children, I also realized that making a homemade breakfast every morning could often be a challenge. Here is how I make breakfast work in our home….

  • Make a double batch. This has probably helped me the most in my daily breakfast making endeavors. Making a double, or even triple batch of one meal (especially breakfast) takes the pressure off. You are cooking for it to last two or three days worth of breakfasts.
  • Plan ahead. I am by no means a meal planner. However, planning out my breakfasts for the week ahead really does help me stay on track!
  • Make variations of the same few recipes. Choose three basic recipes, like the ones below, then make different variations of them for weeks and weeks. Use ham instead of bacon, different cheeses and veggies, or swap out toppings, etc. This keeps the same routine for you, yet a different taste every time!

Keeping a Pantry Stocked for Easy Breakfast

Keeping your pantry stocked with everything you need to make a quick and easy breakfast is another key to success! I often find that I do not make breakfast when I do not have all the essentials on hand. Things like oats, pan spray, flour, chocolate chips, protein powder, etc. all help me stay on track!

That is why our family shops at Thrive Market! They are an only organic, clean ingredient company that has partnered with hundreds of brands to bring thousands of pantry staples right to your door. Shop clean products at affordable prices and never run out of quality ingredients to make your family breakfast meals a success!

Quick and Easy Breakfast Ideas

1. Baked Overnight Oats

Overnight oats are a family favorite around here! I love the texture of baked oatmeal far more than stovetop or microwave quick oats. For a quick breakfast, they do take about 30 minutes to bake. However, all the prep work can be done overnight for a quick and easy morning. Check out all these recipes on the blog for overnight baked oatmeal….

A great way to use up all those breakfast leftovers- this breakfast casserole combines eggs, sausage, bacon, cheese, and veggies. Use whatever you have on hand to create a delicious, easy breakfast. I love making this on the weekend with all the leftover things I have from the week.

3. Quick and Easy Pancakes

This recipe for quick and easy pancakes is my favorite! Fluffy, buttery pancakes served with homemade whipped topping, fruit, etc. Make a big batch in just 15 minutes!

Easy & Healthy Breakfast

This homemade, baked peach oatmeal is one of the easiest warm breakfasts in my opinion. Loaded with nutrition from oats, this recipe can also be made with natural sugar. Use these substitutes for a healthy breakfast!

Sugar. Substitute the sugar for honey, maple syrup, or your favorite sweetener. Make sure whatever sweetener you choose is an equal, one-for-one measurement or adjust accordingly.

Brown Sugar. The brown sugar can be substituted with coconut sugar. This gives that robust flavor that brown sugar offers and the crunchy texture for the crisp topping.

Protein Oats. If you are looking for ways to add extra protein to your diet, use protein oats from Kodiak. These oats level up the protein content while also adding quality to this recipe!

  • 2 cups old fashioned oats or protein oats
  • 2 cups milk
  • ⅓ cup cane sugar or honey
  • ¼ cup brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon optional
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp baking powder

Peach Oatmeal Cream Topping

The homemade cream topping on this peach oatmeal gives it that classic “peaches ‘n’ cream” taste- but better! Making your own cream topping is quick and easy with this emersion blender. You can get the full recipe in this post, however, here is the basic idea….

Ingredients

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tsp powdered sugar
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract, optional

How to Make

  • Combine heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla (if desired) into a bowl or glass jar. Use your emersion blender until creamy and fluffy.
  • Mix on medium-high speed for about 2 minutes or until the cream becomes stiff and smooth.

The Best Double Chocolate Protein Muffins Recipe

August 15, 2025

This recipe for double chocolate protein muffins is so delicious and helps you reach your protein goals! Keep your body fueled with this quick and easy breakfast or midday snack. Learn all about how to make them here…

double chocolate protein muffins

Reaching Protein Goals Without Compromising Taste

When I purchase “high protein” snacks and meals from the grocery store I am often disappointed. The gritty texture, the fake sugar “sucralose” taste, the additives and artificial coloring are really a joke.

That is why I have started making my own protein snacks at home!

At home I can make things like protein muffins without compromising quality and healthy ingredients. No more nasty protein snacks that cost a fortune. Just clean ingredients, and delicious taste!

Protein Goals

I discuss this in another post (Why Moms Need More Protein), but we as Americans are very deficient in the protein department. While this is true for Americans in general, it is especially true for women.

The recommended amount for maximum health benefits, energy, and metabolism balance is 80-100 grams of protein daily.

Reaching these goals is easy when you have recipes like this one and others in your back pocket!

Protein Breakdown for Protein Muffins

These protein muffins have two main sources of protein. The protein comes from protein powder and protein oats. This rounds out to about 6 grams plus of protein per muffin, perfect for a snack!

Choosing a Protein Powder

Since the main source of protein in these muffins is the protein powder, you want to choose a good quality, low or no sugar. You want one that will break down and not become gritty in the baking process. I have tried two brands that I buy from Thrive Market and they are both delicious! Chocolate protein powder from Aloha has 18 grams of protein per two scoops (you will use four). I have also used chocolate protein powder from Orgain (also purchased from Thrive Market). While usually more expensive, Orgain contains 21 grams of protein. Either of these options are perfect for making these muffins.

I love getting affordable, quality protein powder from Thrive Market!
Thrive offers deals from hundreds of brands that provide exclusively organic, clean ingredient products. You can find deals on snacks, protein powder, pantry staples, clean beauty, cleaning, and so much more! Protein Oats

While protein powder alone does give you a good protein source base, adding protein oats from Kodiak adds approximately one more gram. Not to mention, they contribute to the delicious taste!

I can only recommend what I have tried, which is Kodiak brand “protein oats”. They bake well and add that extra gram per serving (one muffin). You can find Kodiak protein oats at Walmart and Thrive Market.

Sweetener for Protein Muffins

One thing to watch out for when choosing your protein powder and oats is added sugar. Both Aloha and Orgain do not contain processed sugar (they both use stevia if I remember correctly). Kodiak Oats contain no added sugar.

This recipe calls for honey instead of sugar to help your body get the most out of the protein. You can use equal parts maple syrup if you prefer. Chocolate chips do contain sugar but if you opt for a dark chocolate variety (or sugar free chocolate chips from Thrive) you will have less added sugar.

Ingredients for Protein Muffins

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup oil or butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup protein oats
  • 4 scoops chocolate protein powder
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Yield. This recipe will give you 12 muffins or 6 large, bakery style muffins.

Storage. Store your muffins in an airtight container or ziplock bag. They are freshest within the first 3 days but will last up to 5 days.

How to Make Strawberry Jam: Just Three Ingredients

August 13, 2025

This sweet strawberry jam recipe is tangy and delicious- made with just three simple ingredients! No pectin or canning is required. Enjoy learning how to make this guilt free jam!

three ingredient strawberry jam

Guilt Free Jam- Simple Ingredients

This strawberry jam is as guilt free as it gets! Made with organic cane sugar, lemon juice, and fresh berries. You can rest knowing your jam is pure and free from preservatives!

Many store bought jam labels have six plus ingredients. This doesn’t sound bad until you look at what they are. Many include high fructose corn syrup and some even include red dye!

These ingredients are harmful to the body and absolutely unnecessary. It takes just 15 minutes to make in your own kitchen with clean ingredients!

Everything You Need for Strawberry Jam

You truly do not need much to make strawberry jam! Just a few utensils and three ingredients…

  • one large stock pot
  • pint jars (amount will vary depending on the amount of strawberries you are processing)
  • blender or food processor
  • lemon juice
  • strawberries
  • sugar- I prefer organic cane sugar

Lemon Juice. The purpose of the lemon juice is to preserve and keep the vibrant color of the strawberry. It replaces the “citric acid” in many store-bought jams.

Strawberries. You will want fresh, washed berries with the tops removed. You do not need to slice them, the food processor or blender will do that for you.

Cane Sugar. Sugar is necessary to get the “jam” texture and sweetener. You can use less sugar if you prefer, however, your jam will be a more runny texture.

I prefer to get my organic cane sugar and other clean ingredients for from scratch recipes from Thrive Market. Thrive provides thousands of products for cleaning, pantry staples, snacks, and so much more! All their products are certified organic, with only clean ingredients. For just $5 a month you can get access to ship to your door, only organic products! All month get 25% off + a free gift worth $60 when you use my link below!

How to Make Strawberry Jam

Making strawberry jam is so simple and honestly, fun! Here are a few things to note before making it…

  • Each pound of medium to large berries will make about 1 pint of jam.
  • You will need to store your jam in the refrigerator unless you follow canning instructions.

Step One: Wash and Blend

First, you will need to wash your berries well. Strawberries make the dirty dozen list- meaning they are one of the most sprayed and exposed to toxic chemicals. Even organic and local produce should be washed to remove dirt and other particles that can contaminate the jam.

Wash your strawberries in lukewarm water with 1 cup of white vinegar and 2 tsp baking soda.

Cut the tops off and place in a blender or food processor (I have had this one for years and use it every week in the summer!). Add lemon juice (about 1 tsp per pound of berries).

Blend on low speed until there are no chunks. You do not need to remove the seeds for jam.

Step Two: Cook the Jam

Place strawberries and sugar in a large pot on medium-high heat. Cook until boiling, stirring constantly to keep from burning. After boiling for one minute, turn the heat down to low and simmer for about 3 minutes.

Step Three: Jar and Store

Carefully place the hot jam into clean pint jars. Leave about a one inch headspace. Screw lids on tightly and leave to seal on the countertop for about 8 hours or overnight.

The jars will be sealed but not fully processed. They will not be shelf stable unless canned. However, they will last for about six months kept sealed in the refrigerator. Unsealed they will last up to one month. Discard immediately if any mold is growing or there is a rancid smell present.

How To Use Strawberry Jam

You can use your jam so many ways. It makes a delicious filling for donuts and pies. Use it on biscuit at breakfast time. However, we use it every week for peanut butter and jelly on our homemade sourdough bread! It does not get any more homemade than that!

Besides that, they taste amazing! You can customize them according to your preferences. It also keeps them from getting boring because you can make a different kind every week.

  • Monster Protein Bites
  • Blueberry Protein Bites

  • Double chocolate
  • Coconut
  • Brownie Batter

Ingredients for Protein Bites

The ingredients for protein bites truly depends on what kind you are making. Here I am just going to break down how to make a protein bite base. You choose the add ins!

Protein Bite Base

  • Old fashioned oats (or protein oats)
  • sweetener- honey, sugar, or maple syrup are my favs!
  • peanut butter
  • optional: protein powder for additional protein value and flavor

My favorite place to get the ingredients I need for this recipe and so many more is my friends over at Thrive Market! Freezing Protein Bites

Freezing protein bites is an easy way to preserve them for use during the month. If you make one big batch you can freeze them and pull out a few at a time.

They thaw quite quickly on the counter or you can eat them still slightly frozen for a cold treat!

It is very easy to freeze them. All you need is a sheet pan or two, some parchment paper, and a tupperware container or ziplock bag (for storing).

Simply roll the mixed ingredients into balls. Cover the sheet pan with the parchment. Place the balls on the parchment giving enough space so they do not touch each other.

Freeze for two hours. Place in a ziplock bag or freezer safe container. Store up to six months in the freezer for freshness.

Boosting the Protein

Some protein bite recipes like this one call for peanut butter as the main source of protein. This alone without protein rich nuts is not a significant source. They are great for a snack but adding in protein powder can take it up a notch if you are trying to reach specific goals!

Add a few scoops of protein powder to this recipe or any other recipe for even more of a protein hit!

You can also use protein oats instead of regular oats to boost the protein content.

How to Make Homemade Granola and My Favorite Granola Recipe

July 1, 2025

Delicious homemade granola with dried cranberries, chocolate, and pecans. Learn how to make this simple pantry staple at home without all the junk!

homemade granola
homemade granola recipe make granola from scratch
homemade granola with dried cranberries and chocolate chips

The Simple Art of ANY Homemade Granola Recipe

Making any homemade granola recipe is so simple. This pantry staple is often filled with preservatives, additives, and lots of extra sugar when purchased off the store shelf. Really you only a few basic ingredients to make a delicious granola at home!

Here’s the main base for any granola recipe…

  • Oats
  • Cereal/seeds/nuts
  • Dried fruit/chocolate (optional)
  • Oil or butter of choice
  • Binder/sweetener (honey or maple syrup)

Amounts used will vary depending on your exact ingredients. However, a simple starting place is equal parts oats and cereal/seeds/nuts. You can use whatever nuts and seeds you have on hand- or any combination! So for instance, if I use 2 cups of oats I will use 2 cups of some sort of combination of rice cereal, seeds, and nuts.

Adding dried fruit or chocolate is completely optional but adds different flavor profiles to your granola base. I usually start with 1/2 a cup and eyeball it from there.

The butter or oil gives the granola depth of flavor and the desirable crunch.

To bind it all together and sweeten the deal you will need honey or maple syrup. I typically use a ratio of 1:2 honey vs oats. So if I used 2 cups of oats I would use one cup of honey; or 1/2 cup oats, 1/4 cup honey.

With just a bit of guesswork and adjustments, you can use these tips to make any granola recipe!

Using & Storing Homemade Granola

Homemade granola can be used for any and all occasions! Eat it as a snack on the go. Top yogurt with it for a quick, high protein breakfast. For dessert, top vanilla bean ice cream with homemade granola.

To store, make sure the granola has cooled all the way. After cooling, place the granola chunks into a glass jar or glass container with an airtight lid. Keep in a cool, dry place. Granola will last like this for up to six months. You may need to stir it lightly with a fork occasionally to keep it from clumping up.

Sourcing Ingredients

As always, homemade bears store-bought. Meaning, if you are making homemade granola instead of buying it from the store you are doing better. However, best is making granola from scratch with quality ingredients.

That is why I purchase only, always organic ingredients from Thrive Market. They provide thousands of products from hundreds of brands that are only clean label- toxin free, chemical free, organic groceries at affordable prices! They deliver directly to your door for just $5 a month and shipping is free on orders over $49+. Use my link to get 25% OFF this month only + free gift worth up to $60 when you join!
