These chicken and dumplings are so delicious and simple to make! Make in the crockpot or stovetop in less than an hour. Get the full recipe in this post!

Ingredients for Chicken and Dumplings

Chicken and broth

  • Cooked and shredded chicken (as much as you wish)
  • 32 oz chicken broth
  • 16 oz water
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 3-5 celery stalks chopped
  • 3-5 carrots (or 10-12 baby carrots) chopped
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper

Dumplings

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 stick cold butter
  • 1-1 1/2 cups milk

Instructions for How to Make Chicken and Dumplings From Scratch

1. In a large pot combine cooked and shredded chicken, chicken broth, water, vegetables, and seasonings.

2. Bring to a boil, then simmer.

3. While the chicken and broth mixture is simmering, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to a large bowl.

4. Cut butter into cubes and add to flour mixture. Mix in with hands and press butter into the flour until the flour has a crumbly texture.

5. Add milk. The dough should be sticky but not too firm.

6. Roll out dough on a floured surface. Dough should be about an 1/8 in thick.

7. Cut with a pizza cutter in uneven pieces.

8. Add dumplings to simmering broth mixture a few at a time. Stir. Repeat until you have added the desired amount of dumplings.

9. Cook on a steady simmer for 15-20 minutes or until all the dumplings are fully cooked.

I hope you enjoy this incredibly easy meal! It only takes about thirty-fourth minutes. Continue reading below for additional tips to make this meal a breeze.

Additional Tips

  1. Cook a whole chicken. This tip makes this meal cheaper, and easier. If you plan on having two meals during the week that both require chicken this works perfectly. Just cook the chicken at the beginning of the week, pick the meat off, then boil the bones to make the broth you will need for the meal as well. This saves money as well as time since you are essentially getting two meals and three ingredients out of it.
  2. The dumpling recipe is actually the same as my southern style biscuit recipe, only cut in half. If you make the full recipe, you can use half of the dough for dumplings, and the other half biscuits for another meal during the week (breakfast the next day is a great option!). If only two are eating you can follow the dumpling recipe and just use a little leftover dough to make biscuits.
