Two Under Two Tips for the Overwhelmed Mom

Welcome to the two under two tribe! This is a very special, and sometimes overwhelming season of motherhood. There is nothing super special about having your babies close together, but it does come with special challenges and blessings. Come get all my tips for surviving and thriving as a two under two mom.

Tips for two under two for pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond!

My Experience with Two Under Two

If my two under two experience could be summed up in one sentence…”We loved it so much we decided to do it AGAIN!”

I am writing this post right before the arrival of Miss Three Under Three! The two under two stage is certainly not without its challenges. It is hard work! However, the blessings far outweigh the challenges in my opinion. Here is a bit about my personal experience in this season.

We found out we were pregnant with our second daughter just four months after our first was born. This was not necessarily an “accident” but we were not avidly trying either. Regardless, we were thrilled and shrugged off the negative vibes from some other people who felt we were moving too quickly (two under two problems, right!?).

Fourteen Months Apart

Our babies were born fourteen months apart, the oldest still such a baby in many ways. Very few people realize how physically demanding this season can be, or the vast difference in development between one year and two. I am not here to complain at all but often I found myself feeling alone from this lack of understanding. That is why I am writing this post and maybe a few more on the topic of two under two.

Only mamas who have been there truly understand. If you are feeling exhausted, alone, misunderstood, or any other feeling I can just about promise I was there in the two under two season. So much joy mixed with so many other emotions! If you have, or are expecting your two under two I want you to be encouraged by this post. Here are a few things to remember….

  • This is just a season.
  • You have a lot going on physically, mentally, and emotionally- and that’s okay!
  • You are enough!

Now let’s dive into those tips!

Pregnancy Tips On the Way to Two Under Two

The beginning of a good two under two story starts with a barely toddler baby and two pink lines! Yep- You just became apart of the two under two tribe!

Whether this though thrills you or you have the “accidents happen” mindset you are about to enter a super fun season full of blessings and joy. Watching your babies (literally!) grow up together is the best! Depending on who you talk to this is going to be the best, or worst, time of your life.

Can I just say first off, it is 100% what you make it! The pregnancy, the birth, the toddler/newborn season- all of it. Your attitude will determine the course of this season so my first tip- fix your headspace!

If you are having a lot of negative thoughts about your pregnancy or doom and gloom ideas about how hard two under two is going to be you need to shift toward the positive. (That is why this blog is a great place to hang out!) I am in no way saying it is all sunshine and rainbows. However, your outlook does matter.

My Pregnancy Tips

Honestly, my second pregnancy was amazing! Even with a less than/barely one year old. However, I also had a very easy pregnancy (very little nausea, no major issues/complications, etc.) and I want to be very upfront about that. You could definitely say I got off easy!

Here are some things I found super helpful…

1. NAP TIME.

The absolute best part about a two under two pregnancy is that the oldest likely still takes a nap or is still in a crib, confined, so you can take a nap! During the first trimester I capitalized on this and took a nap. In the second trimester this was my time to get all the things done! Third trimester, it was relaxing in a bath, nesting, or resting. Do not take the fact for granted that you likely still have a good napper and/or an early bed-timer!

2. Spend quality time with your toddler.

(I am using the word “toddler” for the oldest child who may or may not be a toddler at this point in your pregnancy.) Do not allow this season to go by without spending all that quality time with your toddler. Read all the books, embrace all the snuggles, enjoy all the moments because after you have that baby something happens to your toddler. They look bigger. Act bigger. And you do not get these days back!

3. Monopolize your postpartum prep.

I know how hard this is because your oldest is so needy and you have to constantly watch them. However, anything you can prep for now is one less thing you have to worry about later. I mean things like meal prep (especially breakfast and lunch for yourself!), simplifying toy space for oldest, cleaning, etc.

4. Teach your oldest.

This may sound harsh but whatever “problems” you are having with your toddler are not going to magically disappear when they become a big “sis” or “bro”. If they are unkind to other children, they will 100% be unkind to your newborn. If they do not respond to simple commands like “no touch” or “come here” now they are not going to when you are confined to feeding a baby.

Even if your oldest is quite young during your pregnancy you can begin teaching these commands as soon as you notice them touching the forbidden (electrical sockets!), or crawling towards a specific direction. You can begin to teach what is socially acceptable as soon as they hit that kid at the park or take a toy from a cousin. The sooner you begin the better off you will be when the baby enters the scene. You are not expecting perfection, just the beginning of a basis and understanding in acceptable/unacceptable behavior.

The Newborn Stage with Two Under Two

The newborn stage with two under two is one of the most exhausting stages of motherhood. Not to be discouraging, it is filled with wonderful moments too! However, it can be very draining. You are still trying to adjust to a brand new baby, your body is healing, and this other little, but bigger, person still needs you- a LOT! Here are some tips for survival…

1. It’s okay if you are not thriving.

Our culture has glorified thriving in every season and sometimes life is just not that way. Yes, we should try to do our best and there is so much grace in hard times of life. However, sometimes, life is survival. And if you find yourself there instead of “enjoying every moment” there is nothing wrong with you.

2. Support system.

I say this lightly because we do not all have this incredible web of support always at our finger tips. (If you do, that is great! Use it!). Yet, even those of us who live a bit distant from family or close friends probably have people in our lives who are willing to help us. Maybe we would not trust them to come sit with our children while we nap but they can (and probably would love to!) bring a meal or run an errand for you. The point- whatever your support system looks like, use it. Do not be afraid to ask for help.

3. Safety zones.

Newborn safety around a barely toddler is no joke! Even things like a swing, rocker, lounger, etc. have to be constantly watched. Learning where you can safely put baby down is key. My tips- their crib in another room (make sure toddler has no access; they can still throw toys over the sides, poke eyes, etc.), your bed (if toddler is incapable of climbing in), baby gate the toddler in a safe zone while baby swings, sleeps, etc. Last but not least is baby wearing! They are safest on you and you can have your hands free to tend to toddler needs.

4. Never blame the baby.

This one is big if you want to be careful about not building resentment in your toddler. If your toddler is asking for attention, never use language like, “I can’t because sister is eating” or “Not right now because your brother needs me”. This places the blame on the baby and builds resentment in little hearts. Instead of focusing on what you cannot do with them, focus on what is possible, allow them to help, or make them apart of the process. Things like, when baby eats, they get a snack. When mom has to change a diaper, they get to help. Let them be apart of the “fun” as much as possible.

5. Remember your toddler is still a baby.

Keep your expectations reasonable. Your “big” kid is really still so little- a baby, truly.

6. Special gift.

We do this for our older children when we welcome a new baby. A new toy to play with, game, or special thing just for them. This helps keep them entertained during that transition period as you welcome a new member into your family.

Self Care Tips

I will save my opinions about self care as a mom for another post. By self care I do not mean pampering, but the essential things such as sleep, hygiene, eating, and general care for your body. Here’s some tips for taking care of you….

1. Personal shower time.

Maybe this means you have to wake up early, stay awake later, or work out a system with your spouse. However you have to do it (SAFELY), finding time to take a shower, alone, can be a great way to reset your brain and get some much needed hygiene in there!

2. Feed yourself well.

As we talked about in another post, eating well is so important as a mom- especially when you have two close together. Focus on nutritional, nourishing meals. Read here to learn more about Why Moms Need More Protein!

3. Sleep.

I am not here to tell you exactly how many hours of sleep you need to be getting. We all know the numbers and as two under two moms this is just discouraging, because you likely are not getting the recommended amount! However, trying to prioritize your sleep is so so important. If you feel yourself not getting good rest for several days on end this may be the time to reach out to your support system and ask for help.

4. Getting a break.

Nap time is perfect for catching a break- as long as everyone is napping on the same schedule (and sometimes they just don’t!). I definitely recommend trying to synchronize nap times as much as possible. When this does not work out you can set up a safe play area for toddler or baby and try to enjoy your own space for a few minutes!

5. Do something you love.

This may sound impossible in your current season but if you can find a “thing” that is relaxing to you, a creative outlet, whatever! It is so good for many personalities to have an outlet of some sort, even moms!

Getting Things Done at Home

Not only was I a two under two mom but I am also a homemaker. I also cook the majority of our meals from scratch. I also don’t own a dishwasher….

This means I have no choice but to get things done- even with my very needy two under two. Honestly, I love it! While it took a while to find my new routines, once found, keeping up with this little home and my little people has become a joy!

Here are some helpful tips….

1. Give yourself and your home some grace.

Especially in the newborn to about six month season with the new baby, give yourself some grace. You don’t have to get it all done. Your home does not have to be perfect. Read here about How to Handle Seasons of Bare Minimum in Motherhood!

2. Do what you can when they are awake.

For some personalities this may sound stressful but getting things done while my kids are awake is how I thrive! This gives me my afternoon nap time to do things that spark life or those bigger jobs I cannot tackle with littles under my feet.

3. Baby gate.

Get over the mom guilt! Leaving your kids in a safe space to play (together or apart depending on ages and stages- safety first!) while you get something done does not make you a bad mom! Science shows that allowing children independent playtime apart from you is great for skill and brain development. I am not talking about abandoning your child in a room for hours while you watch Netflix and chill. However, a safe play zone while you do laundry without being tackled will absolutely not hurt your children.

4. Screen time.

I am a huge advocator for minimal screen-time. There are just so many better ways to entertain children that actually work! However, there are times when I’m home solo parenting after a long day, people are not playing nicely, and I have to get something done. In our home this is a great time to bust out that special treat called screen time!

I hope these tips help you as you navigate this difficult and joyful season of motherhood! Let us know your tips in the comments! What would you add? Subscribe to the email list below for more motherhood, natural wellness, and simple cooking from scratch.

Finding Midwives in Your Area

Okay, so you have decided home birth is exactly what you need for this birth to be everything you want. You feel complete peace about your decision. Next step- finding that perfect for you care team!

We will go into much greater detail about this in a coming post with FREE resources so make sure you join the email list at the end of the post!

However, the process of how to find a midwife and where to even look can be daunting if you have never gone through it before.

Here are some of our tips for how we found our super amazing care teams….

  • Check out state laws before you begin your search. Different states have different laws regarding home birth. Some only allow a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) to practice legally (though you can still find an underground CPM [Certified Practicing or Professional Midwife] if that is what you prefer). States also have different laws regarding who can legally home birth, how many weeks minimum and maximum gestation, etc. Start by getting a base knowledge of what this looks like in your state.
  • Join groups on Facebook. Join a home birth group on Facebook for your area. This is a great way to get personal recommendations from other like-minded women and find out who is available to you.
  • Google Search. Many practices and midwives have websites or at very least social media now. A basic Google search for midwives in your area may help you find who you need!
  • Word of mouth. As you meet and interview midwives, ask them who they know in the area! Midwives often work very closely and many have a large community of other providers they know and trust. If you find midwives you like but they are booked up, unavailable, or too far away ask them who they know!

Understanding the Difference in a CPM and CNM

We mentioned this briefly above when mentioning state laws. Here is some more information on the different types of midwives….

A CNM is a Certified Nurse Midwife. They tend to operate on a more medical base of knowledge and less of a physiological, however that’s not the case for all so be sure to do an interview if you have any interest in their advertised services.

A CPM is a Certified Professional Midwife. They tend to operate with more of a physiological approach. Often using very old tried and true practices over standard medical procedure. Again, this is not the case for all of them so do an interview if you think you could connect well with a midwife’s practice.

Remember, most home birth midwives are in their line of work because they wanted something different than what the medicalized birth world had to offer them. So you’re likely to connect to either. Don’t write one off just because of their title.

Student Midwives. The way midwifery care is designed allows midwives in training to get their hours for certification while working alongside an experienced midwife. Usually, there will be a student working with the midwife you choose. Be sure to ask them about meeting her as well!

Setting up Interviews for Your Home Birth

Setting up interview can be daunting work!

Once you have a few recommendations go check out their websites, online profiles, etc. and see if any of them resonate with you or are a clear no, to help narrow down the search. (Use your mom gut- it’s there for a reason!!)

Have you heard of my friends over at Earthley Wellness? They are dedicated to providing 100% natural products for the whole family! They have everything you need from hormone support, vitamins and mineral supplements, herbal remedies for colds, fevers, headaches, and so much more. I have been using their products in our home for nearly a year now and we love them! They have natural products that are pregnancy and breastfeeding safe for peace of mind when it comes to safe, healthy products for my baby. Go check them out and save 10% when you use my link below and the code LITTLEWIFE10 at checkout!

If you’re looking for a CPM and your state doesn’t allow them to practice you will have to connect with them through personal recommendations. This is where the Facebook group is so helpful. They won’t be able to have a website so ask on the group for CPM recommendations and then ask if you can chat with those women privately about their experience with them.

Get a list together of the ones you have interest in and start making phone calls or sending emails asking for an interview. You can request in person if you’d like or over the phone.

Where to Set Up Your Interview

You’re interviewing someone to potentially invite into your birth space. This is important. You can even have more than one interview if you need it. If it’s in person, try to have it in a place that would make you most comfortable. Be it your home, a local coffee shop, the park, etc.

Some midwives work in office and you will be seen there for appointments. If you want to check out their office space the initial interview is a good time to do that. If you are in their office now is a good time to consider a few things like their organization, their hygiene, and how they treat patients.

This may seem judgmental or harsh but these things all tell a story about how this midwife operates and what her care style is. If she’s messy, her office is untidy, and she doesn’t have basic hygiene that is how she will care for you at appointments and throughout your birth. (Give some grace too- we all have messy days! Just trust the vibes you are getting.)

Next Steps on Your Home Birth Journey

Well by now you are probably overwhelmed with all the homework you have just trying to find a midwife! It is serious work. Here are a few other things you will want to do in the first trimester as you begin the home birth journey….

Confirmation Appointment

Your midwife will likely ask you to do a confirmation ultrasound to date your pregnancy and make sure that it is a viable pregnancy (not ectopic or chemical, etc.). This can be done alongside your midwife or through a OB-GYN provider, preferably sometime in the first trimester. If you have not settled on home birth for sure or you are struggling to settle on the right midwife you can go ahead and schedule a pregnancy confirmation with your OB’s office.

Most OB-GYN offices will schedule a confirmation sometime within 8-12 weeks of your last missed period. If you choose to get the confirmation before settling on midwifery care/ home birth, my advice is, do not specify these details. Just get confirmation.

Many in the medical field are opposed to the home birth community. Most mean well but are very confrontational and or rude about your decision to birth how you desire. Some will not even see you if they know you are having thoughts or are decided on midwifery care and home birthing. If that happens your midwife will likely have an OB that she works with regularly for these ultrasounds that she can refer you to.

Your First Home Birth Appointment

Sometime around or after your confirmation ultrasound, you will want to have your first appointment with the midwife (this is apart from an interviewing appointment). This appointment will look different for everyone so we will not go into long detail. However, here are a few things you can expect…

  • It might feel a little bit awkward as you both get to know one another but you should feel comfortable. If she, or anyone in the practice, makes you feel uncomfortable you need to find another provider.
  • Most midwife providers schedule your visit for at least one hour, sometimes longer for a first appointment. So don’t be rushed, take your time and ask all the questions!
  • She will ask you basic questions like how you have been feeling, may give you some tips for how to cope with first trimester discomforts, past birth history (if applicable), diet/exercise habits….and she will probably sprinkle in some small talk to get to know you!
  • She will monitor blood pressure, heart rate/oxygen, belly measurements (maybe not in early appointments), and baby’s heart rate (if after 8 weeks or so) at every appointment. As baby gets bigger she will monitor positioning of the baby and growth (based on feeling of head, bum, etc.).
  • Again, ask all the questions!
  • Before she leaves she will schedule you for your next appointment. Most midwives work from a monthly appointment basis until around 32-36 weeks. From there you will be seen every two weeks until 37-38 weeks. Then every week until your baby is born.

That’s everything we could think of to get you started on your own home birth journey! If you want more natural birth, pregnancy, and newborn content be sure to subscribe below so you never miss a post….

Is Home Birth Right for You: Everything You Need to Know

April 18, 2025

Loading…

Considering a home birth but not sure if it is the right decision for you? Here is some insight from two moms- one home birth and two planned for this year! Here’s what you need to know….

Learn more about if home birth is right for you in this post!

Who Should Not Consider Home Birth

There are very few cases where a home birth should not be at all considered. However, we always seek to view things in a very balanced way. For this reason I think it is important to note that home birth is not for everyone.

Personal comfort, preferences, home environment, etc. can all be a factor. As far as reasons you should absolutely not consider home birth, if you have a medical condition that makes home birth extremely unsafe for you or your baby and could be served better by the hospital environment.

After all, the reason we chose homebirth is because we feel it is the safest place to deliver our babies. If we didn’t feel that way and have the research to back it, we wouldn’t consider it. However, not everyone is in the same circumstances. We don’t all have the same health. There are cases where a hospital is a safer choice. Do your own research because these cases are less than what is typically presented to you.

For instance, wanting a VBAC doesn’t completely exclude you from home birth. However, the risks are different for you, so weigh them for your circumstance. In cases of preeclampsia of preterm labor, going into the hospital setting would serve you much better and home birth should not be considered.

When Home Birth is No Longer an Option

You may desire, even long for a peaceful, quiet home birth but you have a medical condition that makes you or a healthcare provider alarmed. This is definitely a valid reason to give pause to the thought of pursuing a home birth. You may find exploring more options (like a birthing center) is best for you.

It is also important to realize that at any point in pregnancy a condition may arise that would put you or baby at too much risk for a safe home birth experience. That is hard to embrace but should be taken into consideration. For this reason I prefer to say, “We are hoping to have a home birth- if all goes well throughout the pregnancy”. This takes the pressure off myself and places the expectations for a happy, healthy home birth at a realistic level.

Don’t be so set on your plan that you accidentally put baby or yourself at risk. Be balanced in your mind and understand which case calls for which environment or intervention. While birthing at home is a wonderful experience it is so important to trust your provider and your gut when it comes to baby’s safety and best interest.

Who Should Consider Home Birth

Any mama of a healthy pregnancy who desires an unmedicated birth with little or no interventions should consider a home birth! Birth is a natural, in most cases, safe part of life. It is not an illness that requires treatment.

While there is definitely a place for modern medicine and we are so thankful for its availability, a healthy pregnancy should not warrant cause for a hospital stay. Home birth, under midwife supervision, has been safely practiced since ancient times. Yes, there are risks involved in any birth and we are not saying that there are not benefits to a hospital birth that some might find to be more comfortable.

And that is okay! It is a free, personal choice in today’s world. Since you are here we assume you are at least entertaining the idea. So here are some indicators home birth might just be a good option for you…

  • if you truly want a natural birth experience.
  • you want a very personal model of care.
  • if you want a peaceful, quiet birth
  • you do not want any unnecessary interventions during birth
  • if you want immediate and uninterrupted bonding time with your baby
  • you have a good support system (not absolutely necessary but very helpful!)

Following Your Intuition

As stated before it is very important that you listen to your intuition when it comes to the decision of having a home or hospital birth. We don’t mean to sound “woo-woo” but we both believe that gut feelings as a mom can often be a means of God guiding us and the decisions we make. It is so important to never ignore that inward tugging.

Confidence in Your Care Team

As you decide if home birth is the best decision for your family make sure you consider options you feel confident in. This is especially true when it comes to selecting your care team. This will include a midwife, often an assistant or two, and perhaps a doula if you prefer one.

Finding the perfect for you midwife can and should be a somewhat daunting task. You are in complete control of choosing who will help guide you through the important decisions of bringing your baby into the world! (We will dive more into this process of selecting a great midwife in a later post so make sure to subscribe to the email list so you do not miss it.)

If you do not have complete confidence in midwifery care in general I highly suggest researching the statistics on midwifery vs OB care. Study the differences in a Certified Practicing Midwife (CPM) and a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). Choose according to your personal comfort level. Many midwives will have additional training and certification in things like breech birth, infant care, lactation consultation, etc.

Another key thing to note when it comes to having confidence in your care is that many states in the U.S. have differing laws when it comes to who may practice home birth. North Carolina, for instance, has very specific laws. They do not allow midwives to attend breech birth, the mother must be in active labor by 41 weeks, 6 days for a midwife to legally attend the birth, and minimum gestation length for attending midwife to comply with state law is 37 weeks. Researching your state laws regarding home birth is highly recommended as you consider if home birth is best for you.

Prayer

We prayed a lot about where to deliver Jackson and the Lord led us to a further away hospital that had a NICU to establish care with from the beginning. Not only did they meet most of the desires I (Anna) had for our birth, but Jackson ended up coming early. Had we not had established care with a facility already having an in-house NICU, it would’ve been much more stressful when I went into unexpected labor. The Lord knew and guided us in that direction from the beginning.

With this pregnancy, we were led to homebirth. Previously, while I greatly supported homebirth, I had no interest in it for myself. The Lord led differently this time, and I trust His guidance.

Read Anna’s Hospital Birth Story here!

As mothers and parents in general, we always want what’s best for our babies. Only the Lord truly knows what is best, so be sure to involve Him in this very weighted decision.

We hope this gave you some insight on what decision is best for you and your baby! We will continue posting home birth content for the next several weeks. Make sure to subscribe to our email list below so you never miss a post!

10 Breastfeeding Essentials You Need for a Successful Experience

All the breastfeeding essentials you need for a successful experience from a breastfeeding mom of three under three! Breastfeeding can be such a fun and enjoyable experience when you have the right tools! Get my full list of simple essentials in this post…

breastfeeding essentials for a successful experience.

Why Breastfeed?

Here are a few reasons why I chose to breastfeed. No two experiences are alike and you may find it difficult or that you are just unable to breastfeed. There is no reason to feel ashamed or guilty! As long as your child is healthy and happy that is all that matters!

Here are some reasons I chose to breastfeed my babies…

  1. The health benefits of breastfeeding are significantly higher as opposed to formula alternatives.
  2. It is just more natural! Babies were made to breastfeed and moms were made to meet that need.
  3. It is scientifically proven that the emotional and physical needs of a mother are met in the postpartum period by breastfeeding.
  4. The connection you have with your baby is much stronger due to the amount of time spent together, skin-to-skin contact, and their need for food being physically met by YOU!

Read this post about Why I Chose Natural Birth.

Things You Should Know Before you Choose Breastfeeding

1. Breastfeeding is HARD!

I promise I am not trying to be negative, just honest. Breastfeeding can be a long and difficult process in the beginning. It is more difficult for some than others but it is definitely not easy in most cases. I think if you know this before hand you have a better chance at making it work in the long term.

2. Give it two weeks.

I was told this by my labor and delivery nurse. She said that the first two weeks are so hard but if you can make it past that it does get easier. I would not say that after two weeks it was all sunshine and rainbows but it did start to get better!

3. You do not know what you are doing and that is okay!

If you are a first time mom breastfeeding can be frustrating because you have no idea what you are doing. You can have fears that you are not doing it “right”. Just go with your gut and never be afraid to ask for help!

4. Your baby is learning too.

As much as it is apart of a baby’s natural instinct, breastfeeding is new to them too! They have never done this before. In the womb they never had to work for their food and now they are basically thrown into the real world of having to work to survive. Try not to get frustrated at them as you are both learning.

5. You are going to do great!

Your body was made for this and there are very few problems in breastfeeding that cannot be solved. If you keep a good mindset, are willing to work hard, and have the right tools you can definitely do this! If for whatever reason, mentally or physically, you can not breastfeed you are still a good mom! There is no reason to feel guilty or “less than”.

Ten Breastfeeding Essentials that will Change Your Journey From a Mess to Success!

1. Breastfeeding Mama Bundle from Earthley Wellness

This all-inclusive bundle is PERFECT to have on hand if you plan to breastfeed your baby! It comes with nipple cream, a salve for clogged ducts, and a tincture to help support a healthy milk supply. My favorite thing about these products is that they are 100% natural and safe for baby! I had a very hard time with clogged ducts/mastitis with my second baby and the salve was beyond amazing for quick relief. (I used it one day and within 15 minutes not only unclogged my duct but had me leaking through my pad and clothing!)

This bundle is less than $30 and SO WORTH EVERY PENNY! Get 10% off with my code LITTLEWIFE10 if this is your first Earthley purchase. Click here to shop!

2. Nipple Shield

These are great to have on hand for temporary use in case your nipple becomes too chapped and uncomfortable! They come in multiple sizes for comfort. I think they may cause slight nipple confusion the longer you use but they are definitely worth the buy in case you need them. Check out these ones from Mom Cozy!

3. Hot-Cold Therapy Packs

These are a lifesaver! You can put them in the freezer or heat them up. They encompass the entire breast for extra comfort all the way around and the gel beads feel great! Check out this kit I use from Lansinoh.

4. Manual Breast Pump

These are great for collecting from a full breast while baby is on the other or for providing gentle relief to a clogged duct. For those who do not know, when you are feeding on one side, milk naturally expresses from the other side. It annoyed me when I realized how much milk I was wasting! This manual pump catches the milk while using gentle suction so it is not taking much from baby. You can also use it in the shower when you are more likely to leak.

5. Good Nursing Bras

The type and fit will differ depending on what you find comfortable but it is very important that you have good nursing bras! My favorite are these jelly support bras by Mom Cozy. They provide comfortable support and easy access for a quick feed for baby. Check them out here!

6. Nursing Cover

While it is becoming more socially acceptable to breastfeed anywhere uncovered and unashamed, I prefer to be a bit more discreet but you do you! For those of us who like to be modest even while doing something as natural as breastfeeding this full coverage during poncho that I designed is perfect! Plus it is incredibly comfortable! Go check it out in my Etsy shop (find it here).

Note: These nursing covers are temporarily unavailable but they will be back soon! Click on the link above to follow the shop so you will know as soon as it comes back.

7. Breast Pads

Breast pads are an absolute necessity for most of us. Personally I cannot go without them pretty much the entirety of my breastfeeding journey with each baby. You can find all different types based on what you like best. They even have washable ones!

8. Storage Bags

If you are pumping you are going to need somewhere to store all that milk! They make storage bags specifically for breast milk. These bags also work great for storing and freezing homemade baby food when baby is big enough for that.

9. Water Bottle and Snacks

I highly recommend finding a cute water bottle that is specifically dedicated to your breastfeeding career! Choose something that holds a good amount, can go with you everywhere, and fits your style. I find that using a straw helps me accomplish more of my water intake goals throughout the day. Because breastmilk is mostly water it is important for your health and the maintenance of your supply that you stay hydrated!

High protein, one handed snacks are perfect for the breastfeeding days! There is no hunger like breastfeeding hunger. Having these grab and go snacks is essential!

When it comes to finding quality snacks at affordable prices I use Thrive Market! Thrive offers affordable pricing on natural ingredient pantry staples, snacks, cleaning products, and so much more. Shop thousands of products from hundreds of trusted, clean label brands that ship right to your door! Use my link below and get a free $60 gift when you sign up!

10. Breast Pump and/or Wearable Breast Pump

You will definitely want a good breast pump with the correct size flange, even if you plan on exclusively breastfeeding. If you did not know already, most insurances will provide you a free breast pump.

While this may not at all be necessary for you, a wearable breast pump has been so helpful for me! If you need to pump a lot this is well worth the money spent! At a certain point in my breastfeeding journey I needed to pump a LOT to try to boost my supply. I felt like all day long I was either feeding my baby or pumping. I began to feel extremely stuck. Enter the wearable breast pump and I was literally outside doing my chores all while PUMPING MILK!! (Only those who have been there understand my level of excitement.)

Check out this one I love from Mom Cozy!

Seasons of Bare Minimum in Motherhood

March 8, 2025

Motherhood is made up of seasons- from pregnancy to sending adult children off to college and all the seasons in between. There are seasons when we just cannot do all the things. When we are not at our best we can always do at least a handful of things well! These are seasons of bare minimum. Learn how to thrive through them in this post!

Seasons of bare minimum in motherhood- focusing on doing a few things well when life throws us into overwhelming seasons.

What is a Season of Bare Minimum?

This looks different for everyone at different times of life. In simple terms, “bare minimum” (in motherhood) is doing only the essential things to keep your home, your family, and yourself thriving (or maybe just surviving for a season!). It is cutting out all the unnecessary and focusing on what has to be done- not what we feel like needs done.

It is choosing to do a few things well instead of half-heartedly doing all the things for a season.

Examples of such seasons: pregnancy (first trimester and beyond for some), illness, injury, postpartum, grief, exhaustion, depression….the list could go on.

These seasons can last a few days or even a few months depending on the situation. Only you know what this looks like for you.

The Difference Between a Season and Life-Style Choices

A season is never meant to be forever. If you find yourself constantly in a “season” and blaming your lack of motivation on your circumstances you are going to be miserable. There comes a time when we have to woman up and rise above the hardships of life- even in the rough seasons.

There are times when we must expand (stretch) ourselves through the help of the Holy Spirit to do things we feel are hard or even impossible. We cannot use a season to justify laziness in our work as mothers and homemakers.

So what does justify a season of bare minimum…

-something you know is coming in advance and will pass relatively quickly (first trimester, postpartum)

-something completely unexpected or beyond your control (sudden death, natural disaster, depression, etc.)

-a day (or few days) after an exhausting period of time (busy week, sickness, travel, your period!, etc.)

Thrive Market makes feeding your family quality food through seasons of bare minimum easier than ever! Get thousands of healthier options shipped right to your door. Thrive offers affordable, organic, better for you products such as pantry staples, cleaning supplies, snacks, and so much more! Get a free gift up to $60 when you use my link below…

Avoiding Comparison Traps

It is so important to avoid comparison traps in motherhood. Realizing that we each have a different capacity in these tough seasons is KEY. You may see another mom who is postpartum with her third or fourth baby. She’s bouncing right back it seems, doing all the things.

However, you’re struggling postpartum with one or two children. The truth is, our capacity is so different from one another. Often this capacity expands over time and with experience.

Do not compare yourself to others if you are finding a “tough” season easy or if you are finding a seemingly easy season to be hard. We all have a different make up, different circumstances, and a vastly diverse capacity to handle situations.

Avoid Comparing Your Children

Avoid comparison traps with your children, too. It isn’t fair to your child to compare them with another, completely different individual. This can make you feel like you’re failing if another child of similar age seems far advanced from yours.

This works the other way as well. It can puff up a sense of pride where it doesn’t belong. Your children also have a capacity, and recognizing it will help you all get through the harder seasons much easier. Children “read the room” better than any adult ever could. They can sense the change in routine and emotions of mom and dad.

Meet them there in their capacity, too sometimes. This isn’t an excuse to allow negative behavior, but a call for connection along with the correction, not just the correction. If you’re having a tough season, chances are so are they because of how our children feed off of our moods and behavior.

What Bare Minimum Looks Like for Us

Again, avoiding comparison traps! I decided to share a list of what my bare minimum looks like. This could be completely different for you! It is not meant to be a list to follow but just an example of what this looks like for me personally….

  • One load of laundry
  • One load of dishes
  • A pre-made (frozen) dinner or eating out more often
  • Making sure my children are fed, diapered, and snuggled
  • Making sure animals are fed
  • Easy/low key chores as needed (sweeping, cleaning up, etc.)

Planning for a Season of Bare Minimum

If we know that a busier or tougher season is coming up, making preparations for it can help us still serve our families well during those times. Planned seasons of bare minimum are seasons like postpartum, a busily scheduled week coming up, upcoming surgery, etc. We typically have adequate time to plan for these seasons.

Making meals ahead and freezing them, buying some disposable dinnerware, and keeping the laundry (this includes ironing) caught up until then. I’ve also found that doing a little extra organizing before those seasons helps them run smoother. When someone is going to be helping care for you or your family, knowing where everything is at greatly helps you and them both.

For us, another season of bare minimum can be a revival or missions conference with all-day services at church. Planning for ways to make things easier for us all so that we don’t end up coming to church frustrated. Give yourself permission to focus on the spiritual health of your family and not all the tasks to be done. Those paper plates are worth not having a mound of dishes at the end of the week because you haven’t been home long enough to keep up.

Bare minimum seasons aren’t just about hard or depressing seasons. It’s giving yourself permission to focus on what really matters. Like that precious new baby, recovery, and your spiritual health. It’s not always about just surviving but helping your family thrive the best ways we can when this season of life looks different than normal.

Why You Need More Protein as a Mom and How to Get It

February 21, 2025

Loading…

Balanced nutrition, especially in the area of protein, is the most underrated support we can offer our bodies. If you put junk in, you get junk out. Our bodies can only fuel us with as much quality as we fuel our bodies. Today, we’re going to be discussing the specific nutrient of protein and how important it is for everyone, but with a focus on us moms especially.

the importance of protein in motherhood and how to get more protein in your diet

As moms, we’re usually the last to get taken care of. This is a beautiful thing. It is not the detriment that society would like us to believe it is. We get the opportunity to live out a Christ-like love to our children and family each day. That is a privilege. To serve others before ourselves brings unspeakable joy. Sometimes, though, we get so wrapped up in caring for our babies that we forget to give our body what it needs to care for them the best we can.

Sourcing Quality Protein

Protein is just one essential nutrient that our bodies need, but we would argue it’s probably the most important one. What is protein? Protein in its most natural state is found among the food groups provided to us through animals- dairy products like cheese and milk, beef, chicken, seafood. Certain kinds of nuts, lentils, and legumes are also naturally high in protein.

However, not just any protein will do. It greatly matters the sources of your protein. In a perfect world, you want to consume organic, grass fed, grass finished beef, pasture raised pork, and organic free-range chicken. This isn’t always possible, and we understand that. Just read your labels and do the best with the resources you have. Be careful of processed sugars, fillers, and other not ideal ingredients they might try to slap a “high protein” label on as well.

Synthetic or sugar filled protein products are running rampant on the grocery shelves these days. That is why I trust Thrive Market to source natural, plant and animal based protein bars, snacks, and drinks! Thrive offers thousands of non-GMO, organic, natural ingredient products from trusted, clean label brands. They ship right to your door and offer affordable pricing with great deals! Shop natural cleaning supplies, organic pantry staples at half the price, and so much more over on Thrive. Get a FREE GIFT up to $60 when you sign up using my link below!

Getting Enough Protein in Pregnancy is Essential

What even is “enough” protein? Most healthcare providers, especially in the natural world, would all agree we as Americans do not get enough protein. This includes pregnant and nursing mothers. The daily recommended minimum of protein for a pregnant woman is 60 grams per day. Most providers and those who study nutritional science would say you need 80-100 grams of protein as a pregnant or nursing mother to operate at optimal health.

We are not saying that eating adequate protein is a cure-all or guarantee for a healthy pregnancy. However, I do think we highly undervalue the simplicity of nutritional benefits and the science behind a well-balanced diet during pregnancy.

Benefits of Protein in Pregnancy

  • one of the best and easiest ways to help the developing baby while also providing nutrients to mom
  • helps balance fluids and could prevent preeclampsia
  • healthy blood volume and blood quality
  • may help nausea and morning sickness related issues
  • increases energy naturally
  • may help improve mood and lower risks of depression in pregnancy and postpartum

“Proteins are quite literally the building blocks of human life. Every cell in your body contains protein and you require the amino acids in protein to build new cells. As you can imagine, there are a lot of new cells being created during pregnancy, making protein an absolute necessity to supply your growing baby (and your growing uterus and other tissues) with the raw materials to carry out the job effectively.”

-Lily Nichols “Real Food for Pregnancy”

The Importance of Protein During Postpartum and for Breastfeeding Moms

As stated before, one benefit of eating adequate protein during pregnancy is a healthier postpartum. Science shows that eating enough protein along with a balanced diet may prevent depression and decrease mood swings during the postpartum season. This is because our hormones are best balanced when we are getting what we need nutritionally.

Adequate protein helps your body heal from the inside out. The dinner plate sized wound inside your body from your placenta, blood loss from delivery, if you had any tearing, etc. are all best supported with adequate protein. Getting enough protein also supports a healthy milk supply to help provide your baby with the nutrients they need to grow.

Positive Effects from Personal Experience

Personally I (Tori) have experienced the benefits of added protein to my diet as a pregnant mom of two under two. When I try to keep my protein within that recommended 80-100 grams I find that I just feel better in general. My mood is better and I am less snappy. I can focus best and have steady energy, even when I’m not sleeping the best.

One benefit during pregnancy well worth mentioning is the lack of nausea I experience when my protein count is high for the day versus when I have not had enough. I struggled for the first time with intense morning sickness throughout my whole first trimester with my third pregnancy. However, I did notice a major difference on days when I was intentional about my protein intake. Beginning my day with protein, even if I did not feel like it seemed to help the nausea to be more manageable. This also aided in me getting more protein and nutrients throughout the day. (When you start your day puking or feeling very nauseous it is harder to regain that traction!)

Tips for Getting Enough Protein

During the first few months of pregnancy, when morning (sometimes all day) sickness is at its peak, just the thought of protein can make you want to vomit. I encourage you to find a protein routine that works for you and stick with it. If you can get your protein intake ahead of your sickness, you will feel better.

Find a high-quality protein shake or bar that tastes good to you. Find a high protein snack that you can enjoy. Try and keep trying until you find a protein routine that can get you through that first trimester. For example, here is what worked for me. A spoon full of peanut butter in the morning. Now I know this isn’t exactly the best thing, but I found that if I had the combination of protein and fats first, then had a protein shake a little later, I could keep it down. Middle of the day was another protein drink. I used the Chobani yogurt protein drinks. Mid afternoon was a protein bar from Perfect Bar, and in the evening I tried to eat an actual meal and make it as nutrient dense as possible. A protein and nutrient dense chili, a chicken soup with veggies and bone broth, whatever I thought I could enjoy and keep down. This isn’t a philosophy for your whole pregnancy but it might can help your survive the first trimester.

Meal and snack prep.
Honestly, I’m terrible at this, but if I can keep ready-made protein snacks, I always have a good choice to make and don’t end up eating something that contributes nothing to my body nutritionally.

Resources to Check Out

A resource for the best evidence based science on nutrition, in my opinion, would be the book “Real Food for Pregnancy” by Lily Nichols. It will change the way you view food. It also will take away the fear based recommendations we as pregnant women are often given. If you’re looking to gain knowledge on how to fuel your body in pregnancy and beyond, I cannot recommend this book enough.

Thanks for being here! Let us know in the comments how you get your protein in as a busy mom. We love hearing from you! Don’t forget to sign up for our email list for more real food recipes, pregnancy, and mom blogs!

This winter season is no joke when it comes to sick babies! We are here for you with all our favorite natural remedies for supporting your babies and little ones through the sick season. Get them all in this post!

natural remedies for babies

Disclaimer. We are not doctors, nurses, or medical professionals of any kind- we are moms, just like you! We are in the thick of it with three under three between the two of us. Our goal is to share with moms while we are in the middle of this thing. We enjoy sharing all about pregnancy, birth, and babies from a fresh motherhood perspective. We are in no way making medical suggestions- that’s what your doctor is for! These are just some things that we do to care for our baddies naturally during sickness. We believe there is a time and a place for medical intervention when necessary.

Some Advice on Sickness and Babies

Occasional sickness is a normal, natural part of life. Yes, we as mamas want to avoid and prevent sickness as much as possible. However, getting sick as babies and toddlers is a natural part of life, even for the healthy, well nourished kiddos. Do not beat yourself up as a first time or young mom when kids get sick. Build their immune system, feed them nutritious meals, and leave the rest to God!

You can read here all about what to do to build your little ones immune system to help prevent sickness!

Fevers are good! The temp station as a first time or young mom is to freak out when you see the first sign of a fever. Of course you should always go with your gut, however most fevers are not dangerous and actually help your baby to fight the illness effectively. Because of this I usually do not use medication like Tylenol or Ibuprofen that mask a fever and other symptoms. If there is something going on in their body I want to know it is going on. As long as the fever is not extremely high (103 +) or lasting for several days I just let their body do what it needs to do.

Stock your medicine cabinet BEFORE the sickness comes! When your baby is sick is not the time to be scrambling for these natural remedies we are about to mention. You need to prepare for the “storm” ahead of time, not when it is already upon you! I have provided a much more condensed list at the end of this post so you can start purchasing what you need today!

Speaking of stocking up…Have you heard of Earthly Wellness? If you continue reading this post you may notice that we recommend several of their products and we are constantly referencing them. That’s because they are our number one go to for stocking our natural medicine cabinets with affordable, quality products we can trust! Standard Remedies for Baby Sickness

Here a few standard things we do for our littles wherever they do not feel well….

Sleep/rest. As with adults, one of the best remedies for sick babies is sleep! Let them sleep as much as they will let themselves sleep. Try to keep the environment as cozy and comfortable as possible. Newborns and babies up to a year are good at this! One year olds start to get tricky and two year olds are harder to keep down but try to encourage rest as much as possible.

Hydration. Dehydration is one of the leading causes for hospitalization in sick babies. If you breastfeed I highly recommend nursing on demand (when baby wants too and without any schedule) if possible. You can also bottle feed on demand. Try to encourage electrolytes if they will not drink milk. Add a fun colored (no dyes!), natural electrolyte drink mix to your toddler’s water to encourage hydration. Fruits and vegetables with a high water content like berries, watermelon, celery, and cucumbers are a great way to get extra hydration in them as well.

Sunlight. Vitamin D and fresh air are so healing. It is tempting when littles are sick to stay indoors but that is one of the worst things you can do. Sitting outside with them for even a few minutes will help boost their immune systems back up and fight whatever sickness they are dealing with.

Nutritional Food. Avoid super sugary snacks and desserts while sick. Instead try things like yogurt (watch the sugar content!), applesauce, and fresh fruit. Soups and bone broth are a great way to support the immune system and they are easy on the digestive tract.

Elderberry. I cannot say enough good things about elderberry to treat just about any common sickness your babies may have! Elderberry is safe for ages six months plus and safe for breastfeeding mother (you can take it yourself while breastfeeding for babies younger than six months to get the benefits). Elderberry is one of the best and safest remedies for colds, flus, respiratory illness, stomach bugs, and more! The biggest benefit is it’s ability to support the immune system so your little one can fight off sickness quickly and effectively.

Natural Remedies for All Kinds of Sickness

Cold Remedies

The most common sickness you should probably expect your baby to get is a cold in their first two years of life. Minor colds can be tricky to recognize in littles because symptoms can mirror things like teething, allergies, etc. The good part about this is that they usually require no treatment on our part because they normally just run their course without any complications. Some things you can do to help support them are…

  • Saline for stuffy, snotty noses helps to dry up the extra snot. An infant nasal aspirator with saline drops works amazingly (sounds gross but totally worth it!).
  • Elderberry for immune support (6 months plus or through your breastmilk).
  • Feel Better Fast from Earthley Wellness for colds, fever support (not suppression!!), and congestion, and immune support (safe for ages 6 months plus and breastfeeding mothers). Note: The combo of feel better fast and elderberry elixir from Earthley is hands down the most effective remedy for several sicknesses I have dealt with in my babies up to this point- colds, stomach bugs, etc.
  • Extra sleep.
  • Warm baths.
  • Hydration. Sometimes babies struggle with feeding when their little noises get stuffy. Try timing your saline/snot sucking treatments before they need to eat to help them breathe well as they eat. This eliminates the frustration they feel! Feed newborns and young babies on demand.

Flu and Stomach Bugs

  • Hydration is key. Stomach bugs/flus that involve throwing up or diarrhea can be the worst for keeping up with hydration but it is so important! Follow all the tips in the “hydration” section in the beginning of this post.
  • Infant Tummy Relief from Earthley (safe for all ages) for gas, bloating, and upset tummy.
  • Warm baths can be so calming.
  • Sleep.
  • Elderberry Elixir and Feel Better Fast Combo from Earthley.
  • Probiotics help replenish the good bacteria in your baby’s gut and helps support the immune system.
  • Activated Charcoal. If your little one has had diarrhea/vomit for several days you can administer a little activated charcoal (1/4-1/2 capsule depending on age) by way of mixing with apple sauce or yogurt. The charcoal binds to the toxins in your baby’s system and will help remove them so their digestive systems do not have to work alone.

Remedies for Ear Infections and Irritation

If your baby is unusually fussy (especially when you lay them down), they grab or tug at their ears, and they have a low fever you are probably dealing with an ear infection. As a first time mom this was reason to go to the pediatrician asap for antibiotics because they were miserable and I was miserable! I did not know you can easily treat most ear infections at home. Here’s how…

Breastmilk. Sounds crazy but if you put a couple drops of breastmilk in your babies ear it can help heal an ear infection (you should never put anything in your babies ears if you see extreme drainage or they are in severe pain as this is a sign of a ruptured ear drum).

Earthley Earache Ease. This remedy from Earthley is safe for all ages and works great! I have occasional issues with ear pressure, fluid, and infections so I have personally tested myself with this one. It relieves the pressure so effectively almost right away. Click here to check it out!

Warm washcloth. A warm washcloth can help ease the discomfort of ear pain.

Remedies for RSV, COVID, and other Respiratory Illnesses

Respiratory illness in infants and toddlers can be so scary! However, they are naturally treatable and often easily recovered from in most cases. Here’s what you can do….

Humidifier. Keeping a humidifier running can help your baby breathe better while trying to fight a respiratory sickness. Keep it close to them while they sleep, play- basically at all times.

Hydration. As always, keep them hydrated!

Sleep close. When my baby had RSV at two months I found it was most comfortable for both of us to sleep close. This allowed me to keep an eye on her and gave her comfort.

Feel Better Fast and Elderberry.

Cough-b-Gone from Earthley. This is safe for ages six months plus and helps clear a cough up, not by suppressing it but by helping support the lungs and respiratory system.

Cold air/Bathroom Sauna. The rotation of cold air and a warm, humid bathroom can help support breathing issues (especially at night!). I do this by going outside with baby (or standing in the door) when the nights are a bit chilly or placing them close to the open freezer during the summer/fall months. Create a bathroom sauna by allowing the hot shower water to steam up the bathroom (no fans). This allows for a humid environment that calms baby and assists their breathing.

Breathe Well Salve. A great, natural alternative to vapor rubs. Safe for 6 months +

As always, follow your intuition. If you think your baby needs medical assistance call your pediatrician or go to the ER immediately. If your baby has chest retractions (the skin sucks in between the ribs, belly sticks out while breathing), their color looks blue, or their skin feels clammy these are all signs of respiratory distress and you should seek medical help immediately.

Things You Need on Hand to Treat Sick Babies Naturally

Here is a master list of everything we keep on hand in our natural medicine cabinets to treat our babies with natural remedies! This can feel overwhelming if you are new to the natural remedy world. I have listed these items in order of importance (according to my experience!) and each item is linked for your convenience.

Elderberry Elixir from Earthley Wellness. Immune support for all illness. 6 months +

Feel Better Fast from Earthley Wellness. For immune support, fevers, headache, congestion, and upset stomach. 6 months +

Probiotics. We keep these on hand and give them to our babies regularly. 6 months +. Mix 1/2 capsule with applesauce or yogurt. The largest part of our immune systems are housed in the digestive system so keeping the good bacteria plentiful is very important. We use Plexus ProBio5 because it is proven to make it all the way through to the colon where it needs to go before being absorbed.

Infant Tummy Relief for upset tummy, gas, and bloating.

Electrolyte Mixes. Dye free, natural ingredient electrolytes for healthy hydration support. Thrive Market has some really great organic options to choose from! Click here to sign up and get $60 in FREE organic groceries.

Saline/nasal aspirator. For a clear nose to assist breathing during colds.

Humidifier for keeping the air moist for easy breathing (may help kill germs).

Earache Ease for pressure, fluid, and ear infections. Safe for all ages.

Cough-b-gone from Earthley, especially good to keep on hand during the winter months!

Breathe Well Salve from Earthley.

Lavender essential oil. Can be used to rub on the feet or added to bath water to calm a sick, fussy baby and may assist them with sleeping.

These are our go-tos! What would you add to the list? Share in the comments to help other moms. Don’t forget to subscribe to the email list for more mom tips, natural living, and real food recipes!

The winter months of sickness after sickness can be stressful with babies and toddlers! While sickness is apart of life it is important to learn how to support your little’s immune system. Learn all about how in this blog post!

We care deeply about the health and wellness of our families and believe that natural medicine is the best way to do this while also taking advantage of modern medicine when necessary. Sickness and Littles During the Winter Months

Sickness and babies during any season is no fun but it seems like the last few winters have brought a lot of illness to homes with littles. (Or is it just me?) A lot of things probably contributes to this such as sugar poisoning from the holidays and lack of vitamin D which we will get into in a bit. As a young mom this is a hard thing to go through watching your baby, or toddler, fight sickness for an entire season.

Though there are plenty of things we can do to try to prevent sickness and boost up their little immune systems I think it is also very important to realize that sickness is apart of life. We cannot evade every germ and illness, though as mothers we hate seeing them sick! Germ exposure and even occasional sickness are a natural, normal part of life and even help build the immune system of our children. Of course it is hard to see them sick or under the weather but it is important to realize that we cannot fight every germ. Every sickness we walk through with them also helps to build our toolbox.

If you are going through a season of sickness with your little (maybe you are even pretty unhealthy yourself this season) I hope you find encouragement here that you are not doing anything wrong. You can even be doing all the extra preventative things and still have sick babies. This does not mean you are failing. It’s winter. Babies are germ magnets. It’s completely normal to have extra sickness this time of year with littles. You’re doing an awesome job!

Reasons for Extra Sickness During the Winter Season

There are plenty of reasons why we tend to see more sickness in our children this time of the year. We will not deal with all of them but we will give you three reasons and what you can do about it!

Sugar Poisoning from the Holidays

This is a big one for toddlers, especially those two year olds who have not had as much sugar up to this point in their lives. Children consume up to five times more sugar during the holiday season. Many children consume around the equivalent of three whole cups of sugar around Halloween alone. Add in Thanksgiving and Christmas and it’s no wonder children are so sick by January. Even those of us who try to limit sugar intake for our children will find it difficult around the holidays and though they may not be consuming as much as other children they are still getting way more than their bodies are accustomed to.

So what can we do about it?

If you are reading this at the time of posting you know that the holidays have already past. We cannot go back and fix our mistakes from the holidays but we can try our best next year! Another thing we can do is stop the damage where it’s at. Your kids probably still have leftover candy filled with sugar, dyes, etc. Start by eliminating this asap. You may find that you have a cranky toddler for a few weeks from all the sugar withdrawals but it is well worth it. You may even notice some behavior changes after a week or two as their little minds begin to clear up from the sugar fog they’ve been in since October.

Lack of Nourishing Foods

Along with eliminating a lot of sweets and candy we need to be replacing the sugar with nourishing foods. Think about it. You’ve been busy, running around, trying to do life during the holidays. Anyone else eat way more takeout and fast food the past two months? Convenience meals? I feel you girl!

Adding those nutritional meals back into the daily routine is a major step in they right direction. Protein, fruits, vegetables. And don’t be surprised if your once “not picky” eater of a toddler now is only eating two or three bites at meal time. This is another symptom of the sugar high they have been on. It may take some work but over the next couple weeks (with lots of consistency and persuasion) you will start to see that appetite for actual food pick back up.

Lack of Vitamin D

Lack of vitamin D is another big reason we see our kiddos getting so sick this time of year. We tend to keep them indoors more because hey it’s cold out there! (Guilty!!) Even when we do go out we tend to bundle them up in so many layers that the vitamin D does not have a chance to absorb well.

So what can we do?

Five to ten minutes. 5-10 minutes a day outside in the sun with minimal layers will do wonders!! (I know this is not possible everywhere. Use your own discretion.) Try taking your little outside to sit in the sun for just five minutes every day with loose clothing. This is enough time to absorb more than they’re getting indoors!

Warmest day. This is my personal favorite. Choose the warmest day of the week (even if it’s still only 30!) and make plans for outside time. Even bundled up- any time outside is better than no time outside.

Blinds up. Curtains open. Let as much light in as possible. If you have a newborn or young baby let them sleep in the sunlight by a window! Get them exposed to sunlight often.

Supplement/Diet. Eating lots of foods high in vitamin D during the winter time helps to supplement that lack. If you feel like you or your littles are suffering from lack of vitamin D you may even want to start supplementing until you can get outside more often.

Supporting a Newborn’s Immune System

Anna and I have both had the “privilege” of spending the newborn season during the winter months of all of our children (three total). This can be scary, especially as a first time mom! Here are a few quick tips for you…

  • Breastfeed!! We know everyone isn’t able or does not feel led to breastfeed their baby. It is definitely a lot of work but so worth it!! There are many reasons why but a main one being that baby is getting TONS of immune support via breastmilk. The science behind this is amazing and I highly encourage you to research this if you are on the fence about giving it a try.
  • Donor milk. Sounds weird but hear me out. If you can’t breastfeed, don’t want to breastfeed, or for whatever reason choose not to breastfeed why not find a donor mama? At least during the newborn season.
  • Try pumping. Breastfeeding not working out/not your thing? Maybe at least try pumping for those extra vitamins your newborn needs. Even one or two bottles of your breastmilk a day could make a huge difference!
  • Baby wearing. This is a great way to stop germs from every reaching your baby. If you are wearing him/her constantly it cuts down the amount of people touching all over them.
  • No touch/no kissing rule. Get serious about your boundaries. A “cold”, “allergies”, or “tickle in the throat” can be serious for a newborn. You would think people would have enough common sense to know this but they don’t. No one had to hold your baby. You do not have to let anyone touch your baby. A respectful “No.” is a complete sentence.

Extra Ways to Boost Your Littles Immune System During the Winter

Even though you will likely experience a sickness or two regardless of your efforts they are still well worth it! I personally (Tori) have noticed a big difference from last year to this year and my efforts paying off. Trying this list of things may help you totally avoid those germs or at least make the sickness a little easier on your family than others…

  • Gut health. About 70% of the immune system lives in the gut. That’s a great reason to get your whole family on a quality probiotic during the winter months. We both use, love, and trust Plexus ProBio5 to help keep ourselves and our children’s gut health in check! Plexus is one of the only companies that offers a completely natural probiotic that is proven to actually make it to the lower intestines. (Whatever brand you choose make sure it is not absorbed in the upper intestine or it will not do you any good.)
  • Elderberry. The immune benefits of elderberry are just about unmatched in the world of natural immune boosters! Plus it tastes great so the kiddos love to take their medicine. Elderberry tincture from Earthley has been amazing for us this year and the girls love taking it! (It’s safe for 6 months plus, pregnant, and nursing mamas!)
  • Zinc and Vitamin C. Other supplements to add to the list this winter are zinc and vitamin C. You can also find a toddler multivitamin that supplies kiddos with what they need!

Happy winter, mamas!! We hope these tips keep you and your littles surviving and thriving the next few months. Don’t forget to subscribe to the email list so you don’t miss out on more tips for moms of little from moms of littles!

Navigating the Holiday Social Activities with Littles

December 13, 2024

I never knew until I became a mom just how tricky learning to navigate the holiday season can be. To be honest, it can suck the life and joy out of this wonderful season if you let it. Here are some helpful tips for navigating all the parties, family gatherings, and social events….

Capacity and Boundaries During the Holiday Season

We are not all created equal. AND THAT IS OKAY! Just because you see a mom out there with four kids and she’s doing all the things this season does not make you a bad or inadequate mom because you can’t handle that. We’re all different. Some of us thrive off the energy of the hustle and bustle- and we can do it all with that baby strapped to our hip! Others of us find it exhausting to go to that family gathering or social event all while trying to keep children happy and behaved.

Or maybe it’s certain social events that have you stressed out. An awkward family event you are just not sure you want your children to be exposed to. A Christmas party you know is going to be more exhausting than the fun is worth. That social gathering where you know entering is going to be begging to hold your newborn and upset when you say a polite, “no”.

That is where boundaries come in. Acknowledge them. Express them. And don’t budge on them. Here’s what we mean…

If you have restrictions for your children regarding food, certain family members having access to them, naps, others holding the baby, whatever your nonnegotiables are, have a conversation with your spouse before the event. Make sure you’re both on the same page so that they can support you in them or sometimes even offer a different perspective. Then you won’t feel alone while trying to wrangle your children because each of you knows what’s expected of the other. Frustration with your spouse is usually rooted in assuming the other knew something that was never communicated to them. This goes both ways.

Don’t budge on your boundaries with people or situations you are uncomfortable with.

Realize your “no” is enough. You can say “No.” You don’t have to go to every holiday event. You don’t have to let everyone hold your baby. You don’t have to be pulled into the consumerism obsessed society. You don’t have to be so busy that you can’t enjoy your family. You can say no. It’s ok to say, “I’m sorry, I’m not in a season where I can do that right now.” And that’s it, that’s enough. No further explanation is needed. So, just in case you needed permission to say no, there it is.

Learn Where You Can Be Flexible

Learning what things are nonnegotiable for your family and what things it’s ok to relax on will help you enjoy the Christmas season so much more. Maybe nobody will die if we don’t make it home by 8p.m. for bedtime, or maybe they will? Maybe we can skip a nap, or maybe that’s not an option for your child because they really need it (maybe you really need it.). Maybe they can have some sugar this time, or maybe they’ll be really sick if they do? Only you know what things are ok to let slide. Figure out what works for your family. If you try to keep up with it all, you’ll go crazy and miss any joy you could’ve had.

Prioritizing who is most important in your social circles will help you in deciding when and where to be flexible. My (Tori’s) husband’s family lives in Africa as missionaries so when they are in town for the holidays we will be as flexible as we can be to accommodate them and the fact that they don’t get every Christmas with us. On the opposite side of the scale some social events will be put on the back burner because we’re just too busy.

Keeping Your Littles Well This Holiday Season

This is sick season. Mainly because of the lack of sunlight frombeing stuck inside, and all of the sugar that comes with this time of year.

You’re gonna want to support your littles bodies extra. Some ways you can do this are by giving them elderberry syrup, a good probiotic, a quality vitamin C, and nutritious food. Adding these things daily can help keep your little one’s immune system strong to help fight off all the germs they’ll be exposed to this season.

Newborn and Baby Tips

I’m not gonna lie, this is a hard season to navigate. We both have had newborn babies for the holidays and this can be so fun! It can also be exhausting.

My biggest tip is to get your rest. If your baby is a newborn that means you’re still in your postpartum era. Your body needs to heal and social events are not your priority right now.

Baby wearing. If you want your newborn or baby close to you without a big fight on your hands, baby wearing is the way to go!! Chances are they fall asleep in there and you are able to enjoy the time with family without having to explain this very common sense boundary.

Make sure your boundaries are VERY clear. Sometimes all you have to do is let people around you know what the boundaries are. I truly believe most people are not just trying to be belligerent, they probably just do not know what the boundaries are. If you don’t want people to touch simply say, “There are a lot of germs going around right now. Please don’t touch her hands or face.”

Breastfeeding. This can be tricky to navigate if you are breastfeeding your baby. Some social situations are completely fine with you nursing publicly while covered. Other places you will find it very awkward and uncomfortable for yourself or others. I find that the car is my safe place in all social situations where there is not a designated place I feel comfortable in. I keep a nursing cover out there at all times. You may find that nursing is the perfect excuse to get away and chill for a minute!

Toddler Tips

Toddlers, while in different ways, can be just as tricky in social situations! They want to touch everything, maybe you have a picky eater, or one that needs that nap. Here’s a few helpful tips I’ve learned…

Bring what you know they need. Whether it’s a snack you know they will eat, a sound machine for naps, or a few toys to keep them busy being prepared for what you can be is so helpful.

Leave early. There is nothing wrong with cutting out early if your toddler is starting to go downhill quickly!

Touching things. I work on this constantly so that when we’re at sometime else’s home I can say a simple “no touch” and get quick obedience. However, new environments often test the skills we train for in new ways. In these situations I like to distract them with something they can touch (a toy we brought, things the host has placed out for them to play with, etc.). This usually works great!

We hope these tips help you this holiday season! If you still find yourself feeling stressed just remember to relax- it will all be over before you know it. Remember the true reason for this Season is not about us but the Prince of Peace Who can give you all the peace you need this season- even in the most stressful situations.

Finding Joy in a Minimal and Simple Christmas Mindset

December 7, 2024

In a world of consumerism and a culture that says Christmas is all about things we are here to tell you there is joy in a simple Christmas. The simple, minimal pleasures of Christmases past remind us that the size of the gifts does not matter. It’s the laughter we share, the memories we make, and the Reason for the season that makes all the difference!

Blog graphic

The Biggest Question: What am I Teaching My Children About Christmas?

As we now have families of our own, it’s caused us to question everything we do. Knowing it is our example they are following. The Christmas season is no exception to these considerations. Of course, we’ll tell them Christmas is about Jesus, but in what ways will we show them? If we say Christmas is about Jesus, but it feels like it’s all about the presents, have I really portrayed a Christ-centered Christmas? That is where our desire for a more minimal Christmas began. Taking a step back from the consumer mindset and finding value in the things that really matter. We’re not saying if you’re an extravagant Christmas doer, you’re wrong. This is just how we feel The Lord nudging our hearts.

A Minimal Mindset Teaches Sacrificial Giving

Are my children understanding that it is better to give than to receive? A way you can implement this is to allot some of your Christmas budget for your little kids to pick a gift out for their siblings. As they are older and can earn money, you can have them pay for the gift themselves or at least a part of it. Even better than purchasing a gift would be to have them make something. They can bake them cookies, draw them a picture, or build them something. The heart in these projects is much greater than the expense of a store bought gift. These gifts cost time. The most valuable resource.

A way to teach this is to have your children pick out a toy that they enjoy (not just one that sits in the closet) and donate it to your local church for families in need. To demonstrate how The Lord honors sacrificial giving, you can replace or upgrade that gift with their “something you want” gift category. The goal is to teach your babies that The Lord will always honor doing what is right. Until they get to the age they can understand to do right just for the sake of doing right, knowing that He sees all.

Keeping the “Big Man” out of it.

We’re sure this will ruffle some feathers, but we don’t do Santa. In fact, we think Santa is very wrong. If for no other reason than it’s lying to your children. We all know how The Lord feels about lying, so I don’t think we really need to go further right now. If you’re looking to lean into a more minimalistic Christmas, that’ll be difficult if your children are looking at their presents as a measure of their goodness and what they’re entitled to.

Minimal Does Not Have to Mean Boring

We have “amped” Christmas up so much with our consumer culture that often when we think of scaling things down we equate it with boredom. However, maybe what is minimal in today’s world is actually just what “normal” is. The small gifts that spark so much joy, the time spent together, the food we share. These things are only boring when we have allowed ourselves to embrace the stuff, the chaos, and the money pit that is the Christmas of our culture.

Practical Ways to Incorporate a Minimal Mindset into your Christmas this Season

We would be lying if we weren’t thrilled to give our little Christmas gifts. This post is not at all encouraging you not to give gifts or even to be stingy and grinchy in your giving. After all, Christmas is all about giving!

If we have not made it clear so far our motive behind a more minimal and simple mindset when it comes to Christmas is to teach our children it is not about all the toys, the big expensive presents, or the things the world says we all need at this time of year.

Here are some fun ways to give amazing gifts while still having a balanced approach…

The Five Gift Rule

The five gift rule is where you give a gift out of each of these categories:

  • Something to do
  • Something to wear
  • Something to read
  • Something you want
  • Something you need

Some gift givers also like to add another category called “something special.” Which involves giving a gift of more sentimental value or importance.

My favorite of these is something to do. I enjoy experience gifts. Some ideas for this might be a family day trip somewhere local, an outside toy for the kids to share as a combined gift, or even tickets to a family attraction. It’s the gift of making memories.

There are a few ideas behind this gifting strategy. One is being more intentional. Having a set amount of gifts to give causes one to put more thought into what the receiver might enjoy the most. Another idea is that it takes the stress out of Christmas shopping. Since you’re giving out of each category, it narrows down the options and makes it a little easier.

Simple Decor

If you’re on a tight budget or just want to be less of a consumer and more of a reuser, check thrift stores for Christmas decor. Often, you can find some adorable vintage decor for cheap. You’ll probably have to search through a lot of ugly things to find it, but it’s in there. Keep digging.

Homemade Gifts

Can we please bring this back as a tradition! I adore homemade gifts, specifically the edible kind. Home grown and canned goods, from scratch breads and butter. All hand packaged with curled ribbons. It screams Christmas to me. I love it! Aren’t a baker? How about something sewn or crocheted? Something carved or crafted? The possibilities go on, but the point is the thought and heart that go into it.

Pictures

I used to think it seemed selfish to gift someone a picture of yourself or your family. As I’ve gotten older, I understand that family, grandparents especially, treasure nothing more than their loved ones and value those pictures greatly. You can even add to the minimal mindset and thrift the frames or have your children personalize them.

Our Approach on Limiting Others

While we have chosen the more minimalistic approach for our home, I never limit the grandparents or other family in the items they gift. The only limits we place there are the standards and convictions we have set for our home. Things like our views on magic or electronics, and any characters we wouldn’t support. There are plenty of things we choose to set ourselves apart from out of a biblical stance, so the things that are optional I try not to limit. Spoiling grandchildren is a right of passage.

How Will You Continue to Keep is Simple in the Future?

If every year you are trying to “wow” your children with all the gifts and gadgets you are eventually going to run out of stuff. I saw a Facebook post of a mom with teens who was desperately searching for ideas among friends on what to buy for her children this year. They have everything- the video games, the cell phones, ATVs, name brand clothing. There seems like there is nothing left to really knock their socks off this year.

Sadly, this is what our culture has become.

This approach to Christmas eventually leaves the giver and the receiver with less and less joy over giving during the holidays. It just does not spark our excitement like it used to. A minimal mindset is just the opposite. It realizes that the season is more about the simple than the extravagant. It does not mean you are giving your children less- you are giving them more than stuff!

Maybe you have been on this consumer Christmas track for a while now. You have a fine year old or maybe even a pre-teen. It’s never too late to take a step back! We challenge you to give yourself this Christmas. Give your time, give your presence- not just presents.
