blog post about all natural cleaning products we love for spring cleaning and daily use

Why I Think Spring Cleaning is Important

As a busy, pregnant mom of two under two I will say my strategy around spring cleaning has changed a bit over the years. (Stay tuned for a post on this coming soon!) However, I do still find value in setting a specific time aside (particularly in the spring and fall) to fully and deeply reset my home. Here’s why I find this valuable in my life…

  • It’s mentally refreshing. I’ll be honest, winter is definitely not my favorite. As the world starts to wake up all around me I find it so mentally refreshing to bring that feeling of alive-ness into my home by cleaning and resetting everything. It also just feels good to get things done with that warm sunshine and spring breeze floating in through open windows- clean windows!!
  • It helps me stay on track. I don’t necessarily go by a certain schedule with home tasks. I find it much less stressful to just do things as I need to. However, this often leads to a few random tasks being forgotten. Having a seasonally clean where I do all the things helps me to know when these forgotten tasks were last done. It helps me stay on track with when certain things will likely need done again.
  • The timing helps. Having a set time sandwiched between the busy summer season is great! This provides a deep clean after Christmas going into the warmer seasons. As well as a clean coming out of the warm months and into the holiday season.

Homemade Spring Cleaning Products You Can Make in Minutes

Along with trusted non-toxic brands and products that I’ll share in this post I also enjoy making my own homemade products. Cleaning products made from home give you reassurance that only natural ingredients have been added. They are also cheaper!

Homemade Mattress and Carpet Refresher. Cleaning mattresses and carpet are tasks that make it to the spring cleaning list. I like to vacuum out all the mattresses cracks, clean and refresh linens, and give my rugs a bit of TLC. You can learn all about how to make refresher and clean your mattresses in this post!

Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner. For a general, all purpose cleaning spray I prefer to just make one homemade. I typically use an equal ratio vinegar/water base then scent it with essential oils.

Citrus Vinegar. Citrus vinegar is another homemade cleaning product I have come to appreciate. You can make it by allowing citrus peels to ferment in white vinegar for several weeks. Strain off the peels and debris. The liquid that’s left over can be used to shine wooden cabinets, utensils, cutting boards, etc. It is also a great, all natural antibacterial spray.

Brands We Love

Here is a list of brands that I love and trust!

  • Mrs. Meyers
  • Thrive Market
  • Seventh Generation
  • Earthley
  • Method

My favorite place to source natural cleaning supplies is Thrive Market! They offer hundreds of natural cleaning products from non-toxic clean label brands like Mrs. Meyer, Seventh Generation, and so many more. All-Natural Cleaning Products I Use in My Home for a Deep Spring Clean

I have been cleaning our home with natural or homemade products for over three years now. I have tried a LOT of products in that time. Because of this I have a list of products we absolutely love!

This may be shocking but you do not need a cabinet under the sink completely full of cleaning products! Cleaning your home can be simple and the amount of products you actually need is minimal.

Here are the products we use on the daily and for a deep spring clean…

Basic All-Purpose Cleaner. A basic all purpose cleaner can be used to clean kitchen, dining, and bathroom surfaces. You do not need a special cleaner for these places. One basic all-purpose is enough. If I am not making this myself, my favorite brand of all-purpose cleaner is Mrs. Meyer or Seventh Generation.

Non-Chlorinated Bleach. It is bleach without the bad! I source mine from Thrive Market and use it for cleaning things like the bathtub, hard water stains, mold, etc.

Window and Glass Cleaner. It took me a while to find a natural glass cleaner that I actually love. Nothing seemed to beat the sparkle that windex gives! I eventually discovered Mrs. Meyers glass cleaner and it works so well! You can also keep it simple and use vinegar to clean your glass.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner. This is definitely not essential, however I appreciate a good toilet bowl cleaner that keeps things cleaner longer. I source this from Thrive Market as well! They have a great natural toilet bowl cleaner that fights stains for days after use and keeps things looking sparkly and bright.

Wood Cleaner/Polish. If you have a lot of natural wood surfaces like us you will want a wood cleaner and polish to brighten up those spaces. I love using citrus vinegar to clean wood surfaces. If you are looking for a natural product for polishing cabinets and other surfaces Murphy’s Oil Soap is excellent.

Tools for Spring Cleaning

Really all you need is some elbow grease and determination if we are being honest! However, I have some favorites for a good deep clean. Here’s my list!

  • A good bucket
  • A couple cleaning rags
  • Electric scrubber for showers, tile, ceilings, and more! (This is a game changer for my pregnant ladies!)
  • Sponges and wire scrubbers
  • Microfiber rags for dusting and polishing
  • Paper towels
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Broom/dustpan
  • Mop (manual or electric- I love my Bissell Crosswave for daily use in our home. Click here to check it out!)
  • Toothbrush or small brush for tight space scrubbing

How to Make All-Natural Scent Booster for Laundry

Does your laundry need a scent boost? Using an unscented or homemade detergent can leave laundry lacking in the scent department. Sometimes you just want to dry off with a nice smelling towel or snuggle into bed under sheets that smell like lavender. Learn all about how to make an all natural, toxin free scent booster that will have your laundry smelling great without all the chemicals!

Why Homemade Laundry Detergent Lacks Smell

If you are new to the homemade or clean brand laundry detergent you may be wondering, why does my laundry smell like nothing. It is not that homemade detergents smell bad. They may even have a great scent when you first smell but often that smell does not transfer to the clothing, towels, and linens quite as strongly. Why is this?

The ingredients.

Simply put, the ingredients that make towel smell great for weeks after washing is due to the chemical make up of the big commercial laundry detergents. The way the chemicals break down in the washing process leaves the residue that not only smells great but also is able to seep into the skin. These chemicals may seem harmless but when you dig into what they really are they can cause hormone disruption, eczema, and some are even carcinogens (cancer causing). We all love a good smelling shirt but not at the cost of our health and the health of our family.

The truth is you do not have to compromise great smelling laundry for unhealthy ingredients. They just are not the same and you have to adjust your mindset. Once you are no longer expecting your homemade detergent to smell exactly like the commercial detergent you have used and loved for years you will grow to love the clean, natural scent of detergent that does absolutely no harm to your body!

If you are looking for an extremely inexpensive, simple to make laundry detergent recipe go check out our recipe for Homemade Laundry Detergent.

Scent Booster Ingredients

A great scent booster only requires three ingredients. First, you need a dissolvent. Something that will absorb the scent you desire will also dissolving in the washing machine so that the laundry is not damaged or marked at all in the process. I find that baking soda works great for an absorbing dissolvent. Thrive Market is a great place to purchase baking soda and all your laundry making essentials at great prices! All of their products are certified organic so you can ensure you are making your homemade cleaners, detergents, and scent booster with quality ingredients. Click here to get 25% off and a free gift when you use my link!

Next you will need an agitative ingredient. Something that will gently but firmly rub the scent into the clothing to make the smell last longer and be more effective. It also needs to be dissolvable so it does not show or leave residue. I found that epsom salt works incredibly for gently agitating while still dissolving. Unscented bath salt and Himalayan pink salt are also great options. You can purchase organic epsom or bath salts from Thrive Market as well!

Lastly, you will need an ingredient with a scent. My favorite way to scent things is with all natural essential oils. Some smells we love in our home are lavender, anything citrus, and the natural herbal blends from Earthley Wellness like Spring Blossom and Woods!

The essential oil debate is real! Are they safe? Are they unsafe? The research is yours to do, however, I am of the persuasion that oils are completely safe IF purchased through a company that is trustworthy or if they are homemade. I completely trust Earthley Wellness when it comes to non-toxic, chemical free (in the oils and the oil making process!!) essential oils that I use to scent my laundry and cleaning supplies. They can also be trusted when it comes to herbal oils to be used medicinally! If you are looking for a company you can trust go check out Earthley! They have hundreds of herbal cleaning supplies, personal care items, and medicinal tinctures for everything from teething to hormone balancing. How to Make Scent Booster

Making scent booster for your laundry is so easy! It only takes just a few minutes of your time and not much energy. Simply gather all your ingredients: baking soda, epsom salt, and essential oil. You will also need a glass jar with a lid to store your scent booster.

The recipe box farther down this post has all the actual measurements you will need to make one batch. However you can use any variation of equal parts baking soda/epsom salt and around 15-20 drops of oil per cup of soda/salt.

Place your salt and soda in the glass jar, add essential oil drops. Stir with a fork and allow to sit about five-ten minutes then stir once more. This ensures that the oils are being absorbed completely by the salt and baking soda.

Place the lid on the jar and your scent booster is ready for use!

How to Use Scent Booster

Using scent booster in your laundry is just about as easy as making it! All you need is about one to two tablespoons per load of laundry. Simply throw in the desired amount and you are good to go! I prefer to use less, around one tablespoon for clothing, and more, between two to three tablespoons for linens and bath towels.

Questions about Scent Booster

Will the essential oils stain my clothing?

I only have experience with Earthley Wellness essential oils but I have not have any issues with the oils staining or marking my clothes. The way the baking soda absorbs the oils helps it to evenly distribute and dissolve in the washing machine. If you are using a less trustworthy brand or are unsure of the brand you are using I would recommend doing a test wash with some dispensable items first.

Homemade Mattress Refresher and How to Clean Your Mattress

June 16, 2022

Learn all about how to make your own homemade mattress refresher! As life happens mattresses get dirty. How often do you think about this? If you are like me, probably seldom, if ever. Occasionally I would remake the bed and think, “This mattress has a lot of dust in the cracks!”. Do you know what I did about it? Absolutely nothing. I covered it back up with fresh sheets, then went about my day forgetting the dust and dirt even existed.

diy natural mattress refresher and tips for how to clean your mattress

After de-sheeting the bed a few weeks ago, I decided it was finally time to do something about all that nasty dust and grime. Maybe it is because I was second trimester pregnant and needed to freshen my nest, but I truly believe I have found a solution that not only will leave your mattress less crusty but also smelling great!

How to Make Mattress Refresher

What you need:

  1. Baking soda
  2. Your favorite essential oil.

I used orange oil because it is summer and I thought it would be a nice, seasonally appropriate scent. I also chose to store my mattress refresher in a small jelly jar because it matches the storage for all my other homemade cleaning supplies. However, you could easily store it in a plastic bag or Tupperware container.

My favorite place to buy essential oils for aromatic and medicinal use is Earthley Wellness! Earthley is dedicated to providing their customers with quality, trustworthy products for the whole family. They are my source for all things natural wellness. I love their products and I know you will too! Use my code LITTLEWIFE10 for 10% off your first order!

How to Make:

Measure out 3/4 a cup of baking soda and place in desired storage.

Add 25-30 drops of desired essential oil.

Stir in and let sit about 10 minutes. This gives the soda time to soak up the scent of the oil. (Note: I stirred mine with a fork to allow powder to stay loose and easier to manage.)

How to Refresh your Mattress

While you are waiting on the soaking refresher, strip your bed of all blankets, pillows, and sheets. I take this time to go ahead and wash those items and replace with fresh, clean ones. This will leave everything smelling wonderful!

Once the refresher has sat for about ten minutes sprinkle it liberally all over your mattress.

Allow the refresher to rest on the mattress for thirty minutes to an hour. (Leaving it longer will not do any harm.) Make sure if you have littles that they do not get on or near the bed at this time.

When you are ready, get your vacuum out and vacuum the powder up with the hose attachment. As you vacuum the powder you will also be getting rid of all that dust and grime while leaving behind a clean smelling mattress.

You can refresh your mattresses and carpets as often as you would like. I recommend trying to do it every three to four months.
