What is in Your Heart Will Spill Out

March 25, 2023

We have all heard the illustration that when a cup is bumped what is inside the cup will spill out, demonstrating the fact that what is in our heart will come out when our heart is “bumped.”.

I love when life is easy. When there is enough money, my husband and I are in complete agreement about everything, the kids are perfectly behaving, the extended family is loving and pleased… You get the idea. Everything is “hunky-dory”. In those times, joy comes easy. Love seems to overflow. Everything is beautiful. BUT life often is not perfect. Why does God allow trials to come, relationships to struggle, life to “hit bumps”? I believe, in part, it is to reveal to us what has been in our hearts all along. He reveals character flaws and – yes, lets call it what it is- sin so that we can deal with it.

The Bible states, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9)

When we first meet Rachel in the Bible, she seems a beautiful person; but as her life becomes complicated and even unfair, the real Rachel “spills out”. We see her to be a very selfish, competitive, manipulating person, who looked to others and even idols to supply what only God could give her. Her beauty was only skin deep. Inwardly, she was a very ugly, unhappyperson. Though she eventually received her most sought-after desires; she died leaving them for others to raise.

Is life a little hard right now? Are you experiencing feelings of frustration, discontentment, etc.? Have these feelings spilled out to others?

Thankfully, we are not dead. There is hope. We can allow God to cleanse our hearts. (Ps. 139:23,24) We can refocus and surrender to God’s inward working (Phil 2:13) so that no matter what “bumps” us, we can spill out the love and grace of God. The story of Job has taught us that everything we go through has at least three purposes: to accomplish something in our life, to comfort and help others, and to bring God glory. (James 5:10,11) Only a right response to the trials in our life can accomplish all of these purposes or in the words of our illustration, “ spill out” God’s purpose straight from our Holy Spirit- controlled heart.

He Can Fill the Void

Written by Anna Bourdess

Have you ever experienced disappointment, feeling like someone has failed you? Has someone let you down whom you never thought would or they’ve even become a different person than they used to be. Did you hold someone on a pedestal you created for them in your own mind and they’ve shown their humanity to you, leaving you disheartened and untrusting? Perhaps you’re waiting on The Lord to send you a helpmeet and the pit of loneliness is holding you captive?

I want to share a simple, yet, life changing truth with you today. He can fill any void.

I’ve heard so many precious people tell me how disappointed they are because their spouse, friend, parent, etc. has failed to be what they have needed. There was a standard or place they felt should’ve been filled and it wasn’t.  It was never met which left nothing but an empty space where those expectations once dwelled. I’ve heard bitter children sob as they share all the ways they discern their parents have failed them. Wives broken, as their husbands couldn’t fulfill them spiritually or emotionally. Young men and women who wish so greatly for a helpmeet and companion. Church members desiring more than any pastor could ever give. Pastor’s wives drowning in the sea that is ministry. All these and so many more I could name all have one thing in commom. There is a void they perceive a person should have filled for them and that person failed.

You see, a harsh reality is that people are going to fail you. Some intentionally, many unintentionally. Often we’re the ones that fail ourselves because we set expectations on other people or dreams that only The Lord can provide. We put those expectations in places that The Lord should’ve been. In some cases we even end up worshipping those desires by allowing them to rule our lives.

God’s Word tells us that He can be our everything if we let Him.

Mother, Father, Sibling, Spouse, Rock, Defense, Comforter, Shelter, Healer, Savior, Master, Friend, anything we could ever desire can be found in Him.

There is no relationship on this earth that could ever compare to the intimate fellowship of walking hand in hand with The Lord. Only He will bring the satisfaction you’re looking for. There is no job, boyfriend, spouse, child, pastor etc. that will satisfy the void deep within you. If you’re struggling with a void inside, let Christ fill it. Draw up close to Him. Cling to Him with all you’ve got because only The One who created the soul, can satisfy it.

Simple Ways You Can Make Your Home Beautiful on a Budget

How often do we as homemakers live in a constant state of dissatisfaction over our home? We try, and try, and try some more but we never seem to be able to get it just right. It never seems to be “done”.

We go to Hobby Lobby and spend a ton of money just to get home and realize we are still not 100% happy with every nook and cranny. Then we have the guilt of spending so we load it up and take it all back. (Please tell me I’m not the only one that does this!)

My first bit of advice is that you need to ditch the idea that your home should be perfect.

We live in a culture where we are constantly bombarded by Pinterest perfect homes. Spotless kitchens, perfectly decorated living rooms, and immaculate patios greet us on all the social media platforms. Constantly seeing these things can make us dissatisfied with our homes.

Instead of focusing on immediate perfection try focusing on daily beautification. Part of being a homemaker is taking what we are given to make the place we have been given beautiful. Not perfect. Not spotless. A place of peace and calm enjoyment for those who enter. The kind of place you always want to come back to. Lots of women are making houses, not many are making homes.

We do this first by adjusting our own attitude. If we are living in a constant state of frustration, discontentment, and self-pity it is likely no one is feeling a “home” atmosphere. What makes a home is not perfectly placed pillows it is the people who live there.

Once you have taken the time to adjust your attitude, then you can begin the process of making your home beautiful. Not with hundreds of dollars sprinkled throughout. Simply using what you have to make your home a comfortable, peaceful place.

10 Ways You Can Make Your Home Beautiful on a Budget

1. Clean it!

This sounds so ordinary and obvious. Don’t tune me out! I honestly think a big part of our homes looking bright and cheery is taking the time to do some deep cleaning every now and again. It does not have to be spotless! Just taking the time to vacuum under the couch, wipe off cabinet doors, and dust every now and then can do wonders for making your home feel like a better place.

2. Declutter.

I think a lot of the reason we can easily become dissatisfied with our homes is that we simply have too much stuff. Our culture pushes so many unnecessary gadgets that we think we need. If you have the space for it all, great! However, some of you (like me) may be living in a smaller space. Taking the time to get rid of the things you do not need can help make your home’s environment one of calm and comfort.

3. Organize.

Along with the decluttering, organize! We can not throw everything away and some of us need more than others. By just taking what we have and giving it a proper place we have created order and order instantly creates satisfaction. You may fins you need to re-organize each season, I know I do! Things can so easily get out of place but it always feels better when things are organized.

4. Re-arrange the furniture.

This one I learned from my mama! If your home is starting to get dull and boring to you, there is no better way to spice things up than moving your furniture around! Experiment with different placements every now and then.

5. Add cozy touches.

Adding a few cozy touches here and there can really help make things more interesting. They do not have to be expensive. Just add small things like cute candles, houseplants, throw blankets, some pillows, and you’re set!

6. Decorate your door.

Again, this does not have to be expensive, just use $20 to make your door pretty! Adding a wreath, some pumpkins beside the door in fall, a nice doormat, or cute sign helps make your home warm and inviting.

7. Plant some flowers outside.

Liven things up a bit with a small (or big!) flower bed, a pot of flowers by the door, or a few window boxes. I also find that hanging plants can be a cheap and easy way to brighten up a space! Most of the time hanging plants require low maintenance.

8. Fresh paint.

A fresh coat of paint can go a long way to make a space feel new again. If you are low on budget and time you can re-paint a room at a time. Painting cabinets, closets, and trim is a good way to refresh a space affordably.

9. Update fixtures.

This could get a bit expensive depending on your taste but if you really want to make things pop get rid of those gold door knobs and replace them with something modern that you love! A cheap way to update if you do not have the money to redo all the fixtures is to replace old light switch and outlet covers with fresh, new ones.

10. Add more light.

Brighten your house up with some lamps! This is tip is my favorite for fall and winter when the light outside is so limited. You can find nice lamps on a budget at thrift stores or on Facebook Marketplace.

Just be happy in the home you are in!

Do not compare your home to others. Make sure it is your style and not an Instagram influencers. Embrace all the imperfections, and your home will be a lovely place!

What are some more ways to make your home beautiful on a budget? I would love to get more ideas in the comments below! Thanks for being here.

Taking the Time

March 11, 2023

Written by Katie Ledbetter

If I could go back and give my younger self a talking to, I would tell her to take more time to enjoy the moments that are so quickly passing by.

We all aspire to be the “perfect mother,” but what is that? We have A Perfect Saviour, but we have no perfect mother to emulate. Yet, we are all trying to be the person we envision that is slightly better than what we’ve seen and had emulated in our own lives. We place so much unnecessary stress on ourselves trying to achieve what we don’t even know.

We try to keep the husband happy, children loved just the right way, house clean, meals cooked, laundry caught up, garden tended, bread made, blogs posted, side jobs running, church events on schedule, friendships maintained, family not neglected, and through it all don’t forget self care. Just writing that list makes me exhausted. Often instead of enjoying it all we are stressed and so very tired.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

The Lord has laid out in His Word that there is a time for everything. Time is a gift we are given that has an expiration date. Have you ever accidentally thrown the expiration date away on something and then later wondered if it had expired? At this point I panic and into the trash it will go. That’s so often what we do in life. We don’t know when the end is coming so we live life in a panic state throwing moments away instead of enjoying the time we’ve been blessed with.

What I would tell my younger self is to invest more heavily into the treasures you’re taking with you than the environment you won’t. I love having a clean house, and I do feel that it’s my job to manage my home, but quite often we as women can focus on performance and outcome over training and outreach.

Young momma you have your children for such a short time at home.

Before you know it that nursing baby will be walking and then running. They will soon feed themselves, dress themselves, and not need you to interpret their sweet words to others. Motherhood is a job where the goal is to train them so well they don’t need us anymore. It’s not an easy task to see this happening in life so let me encourage you while they are small to enjoy the moments and make the moments enjoyable.

Slow down, lower your expectations on yourself and others. Loosely budget your time allowing for quick change when necessary. Hold your babies a bit longer and tighter, while they still need and want it. Pray over them instead of laying them down quickly to do the dishes or sweep a floor. Get them involved in every thing you are doing and all that needs done. Yes, it will take longer but they will learn that you being with them is something you love and enjoy, and not something you’re tolerating. Sing with them, quote Scripture with them, worship The Lord with them. Do the things with them you know will be in eternity.

Momma, things change as your children grow. Plant seeds in their life now that will grow up in them to become good fruit in their lives and point them to The Saviour. Let go of the idea of perfect and embrace The Lord’s will. Know where He leads WILL be perfect as you follow Him.

Homemade Pizza Crust Recipe and Tips for a Better Tasting Crust

This pizza crust recipe is great for a family pizza night! I know I post a lot of sourdough recipes lately but this one is regular old yeast for the readers who do not have a starter.

As a side note, I am working on creating an easy to understand sourdough class for beginners. It should be released by the end of the month. If you would like to be notified when it releases be sure to subscribe to the email list!

Now let’s chat common problems with homemade pizza crust…

Crust Tastes Plain

This can be a problem because your main pizza chain restaurants basically always flavor their crust! To avoid the problem of your crust tasting like cardboard try thinking outside the box with different seasoning combinations. Here are a few to try:

  • Garlic butter
  • Italian (use an Italian seasoning mix)
  • Garlic and herb
  • Cajun butter
  • Pepper Flakes

Get creative and see if it helps step up your pizza game!

Here’s another idea when it comes to plain tasting crust- stuff it!

There are few who will disagree that stuffed crust pizza is better. My favorite way to stuff a crust is with ground sausage and mozzarella cheese! It’s amazing dipped in some marinara sauce. It also helps the pizza last longer because it is so filling.

Crust Tastes Yeasty

I had this problem for years while trying to come up with the type of crust recipe I wanted. You put in all that hard work just to get to the end and it taste like I just poured some pizza sauce over yeast! I think this is where a lot of people give up on homemade pizza crust. Here are a few ways you can correct a yeasty tasting pizza…

  • Make sure you let the dough rise sufficiently. A good rule of thumb when working with any kind of dough is to let it double in size.
  • Check to make sure your yeast is in date. Store yeast in the refrigerator, it will stay fresh longer
  • Avoid fast or quick rise yeast.
  • Dissolve yeast all the way before using.
  • Use enough honey or sugar to offset the yeast flavor.

If you are still having yeast problems after trying the solutions above it may be that the recipe you are using just is not for you.

Crust Does Not Rise

This can be an issue if you have not allowed to dough to rise sufficiently before baking. When dealing with most rising doughs you are working with a two-three rise system. Simply meaning that before it will rise during the baking process you must first allow the dough to rise.

After mixing all of your ingredients and kneading the dough you need to let it rise by doubling in size. This could take several hours depending on your climate and the temperature of your house. Yeast and sourdough react to heat. If you are having trouble getting a good rise try these tricks below.

The Height Method

We all know that heat rises. Try placing your dough somewhere high during a rise. On to of your refrigerator, on a high cabinet or shelf are a few ideas.

The Oven Method

This one never fails me! You have two options: one, place the bowl of rising dough on the stovetop of a heated oven. The heat from the oven will cause the dough to rise. Two, heat your oven to 350 degrees for ten minutes then turn it off. After the oven has cooled down but is still decently warm, place the dough in the warm oven and allow to rise.

Be careful not to let the dough over rise or it may have a slightly yeasty taste.

Now that we have covered the basic tips for a homemade pizza crust let me share with you my favorite recipe!

I hope you enjoy this and that it turns out great. Remember you can be creative with seasoning and stuffing the crust. Here I will just give the basic crust recipe and you can add your own spin on it with the fun stuff!

Keeper at Home

Written by Anna Bourdess

Titus 2:5
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

…keepers at home…

Ladies, we are not called to care for our homes by just washing dishes, scrubbing floors, and dusting furniture. Keepers do not just wash the clothes.

The first real mention in The Bible of the word “keeper” was in reference to keeping sheep.

Keepers not only nurture, they guard, preserve from danger, and keep watch.

We are often the first line of defense for our homes. As our husbands follow The Lord to set the rules and biblical guidelines for our home, it’s up to us while our husbands are providing, to keep watch and enforce the guidelines that have been set.

I could name home after home I know of personally that has been destroyed by wives/mothers who chose not to enforce the biblical guidelines set for their homes by The Lord and their husbands. As soon as their spouse walked out the door they allowed the wolves of compromise to come in and devour their homes freely, without even a fight. Today some sit with ruined lives of their own, failed marriages, and some have even lost their children’s souls, all because they chose to let their flesh set the guidelines instead of following The Lord and their husbands.

Lord, help me remain strong and understand the magnitude of the calling to my role in the home. Help me hold strong the line of defense. Lord, help me.

How to Walk with the Lord in the Nursery Years

February 11, 2023

By Katie Ledbetter

Dear precious mommas,

You’re in the most wonderful years of your life. The Lord is blessing your home with children and your hearts desires are being fulfilled. At home you are finding your schedule that works best as you strive to raise young ones to someday become fully functioning adults that benefit this world. You also have another hearts desire – to see your children come to Christ, love Him, and serve Him.

With this desire you put them in the car seat, drive them to church, and then miss the entire service taking care of their needs. You arrive home off schedule and exhausted with a baby who now wants to cry, eat some more, and falls back to sleep just in time to be placed in their carseat and driven back to church where they will wake up and cry and you’ll most likely miss another service sitting in a classroom, nursery, bathroom, or some hallways just trying to hear even a tiny portion of the service.

Many momma’s at this stage start missing church. They get so discouraged and tell themselves going to church is pointless. They say they are getting nothing out of it and their child is too young to benefit at all so they will just go again when the child is older. Anyone who has been in this situation understands the logic and if we’re being honest we’ve all cried in that nursery, classroom, bathroom, or hallway a time or two. Before you were a momma you had a freedom you probably took for granted. You had the ability to listen, learn, and grow in every church service you attended. Your heart will now long for that in these years.

So, why put yourself through it? Why the hassle?

There is one simple answer that I’ll give at the end but until we get there let’s look at other things you do for your child that are of no benefit to you personally.

You bathe your child.  This is a back breaking task that leaves you often soaked and sore but you do it anyway because you want to teach your child good hygiene and you know it’s just the right thing to do.

You feed your child. Whether it’s breast or bottle feeding a baby stops you in your tracks, keeps you from achieving anything productive, and can leave you sore and tired in the process. You do it because it’s best for your baby to grow.

You clothe your child. This is not necessary is it? I mean this baby could be wrapped in blankets until it’s two and no one is gonna care right? But, no, you wrestle little head, arms, and legs to make that cute little monster as adorable as possible. This creates more work for you with laundry and more expense but you don’t care because you love that baby and you want what is best to be shown on the outside.

These are just a few things we do as mom’s that we don’t have to do but it’s a benefit to the baby and we do them because we are lovingly teaching them how to become a functional human being. So, why church when you’re stuck getting nothing and it seems to make life harder on the baby and on you?

Simply because you are teaching your child to be faithful in the hardest of times. You teach them through that bath about hygiene, you teach them through feeding them about sacrifice, and you teach them by clothing them about love. Going to church and being faithful even when it’s hard teaches them about faithfulness and obedience in a way that they may never remember but in a way that sets a pattern for their life.

Do you remember your first bath? Do you remember who taught you to eat or who taught you how to put your clothes on? If you were raised in church do you remember when you learned it was right to go even when you were hurt in church or unhappy or maybe feeling like staying in bed? You probably don’t remember but you do know inside yourself that it’s just right to go no matter what. Do you remember when you first learned to listen to the pastor and listen to God’s Word? You probably don’t but to this day you know it’s right.

Momma, these days are not easy days, but these days you have an opportunity to teach your babies invaluable lessons. They won’t look at you in the next few years and ask, “Are we going to church?” on Sunday. They will ask, “When are we leaving? Can we get in the car? Can I sit with my friends today? Can I give in the offering?”

In those times Momma when you’re in that nursery, classroom, bathroom, or hallway and you want to give up, instead become a prayer warrior for your church, your pastor, your church family, your children, and your husband. You are being given an opportunity away from home to do something special for The Lord that only you can do. You are raising the next generation and pointing them to Him. You are showing your children what obedience to God’s Word looks like in the hard times. They may never remember where or when they learned it but someday it may be what carries them through. Don’t get weary in well doing!

2 Thessalonians 3:13 KJV
But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

Galatians 6:9 KJV
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Hebrews 10:24-25 KJV

And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: [25] Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is ; but exhorting one another : and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

With much love,
From a mom who’s been there

sourdough chicken and dumplings recipe

Benefits of Adding Sourdough

I absolutely love chicken and dumplings (chicken and dumplins if you are from the south) and I love all things sourdough! The combination was so perfect. It is definitely a great cold-day kinda meal (although I’ll for sure be making it any time of the year!). One of my favorite things about this chicken and dumplings recipe is it uses sourdough discard. I am always looking for fun and creative ways to use my discard. I hate throwing it out! You can also use fresh, active starter with great results as well.

Among the many health benefits we could discuss, the biggest benefit sourdough starter brings to this recipe is the adde flavor! I have tried several dumpling recipes over the years and you truly cannot match the flavor of the sourdough. This added ingredient just takes this already delicious meal up another level!

Don’t have a sourdough starter? You can! What if I told you that I truly believe anyone can learn to make and maintain a sourdough starter? You do not have to be a scientist, have loads of time, or even understand everything about it to make delicious food and keep your starter alive! If you are wanting to learn to make your own sourdough starter from scratch you can read all about that in this post! We also sell our dehydrated starter over in the Etsy store for a quicker, more convenient start to your sourdough journey!

In the meantime get my non-sourdough recipe for Chicken and Dumplings in this post!

Making Sourdough Chicken and Dumplings From Scratch

Sure, you could buy cans of cream of chicken, chicken broth, and even canned biscuits to use for dumplings. You would have the recipe made in about half the time and it probably would not taste that bad! However, around here we are all about food from scratch. We believe in feeding ourselves and our families nourishing meals as much as possible. Real food with real ingredients.

If you are new to cooking meals from scratch this may sound complicated but I highly recommend giving it a try! You will soon notice results in your energy levels, hormone balance, and overall health. The truth is it does not even take that much longer to through a from scratch meal together when you have the ingredients and learn the process. Make sure you subscribe to your email list so you do not miss out on from scratch recipes like this one!

My Process for Making Sourdough Dumplings From Scratch

Having the right processes in place can really cut down the time and hassle of making meals from scratch. This entire meal takes me around 30-45 minutes to prepare and even shorter if I prep things ahead of time. Here’s how I make it work…

  • Step One. Cut the chicken breasts in half down the middle to make them thinner then boil. This takes around 10-15 minutes if fully thawed out. Another time saving tip would be to cut the chicken pre-boiling which will cook it faster. You can even have the chicken boiled and cut/shredded days ahead of time.
  • Step Two. Allow chicken to cool while starting the broth. (I like to make my broth in the same pot I boiled the chicken in making this a one pot meal for easy dish clean up!)
  • Step Three. While thickening the broth, start making up the dumpling dough if you have not already prepped it. Roll it out and cut it/shape it into a ball while the broth is warming back up to cook the dumplings.

This process seems to work the best for me but you may find you need to tweak it a bit for yourself! The point is that from scratch meals do not have to take forever to make.

Fermentation vs. Unfermented Dumplings

The choice to ferment or not ferment the dumpling dough completely comes down to dietary needs as well as convenience. This sourdough recipe does not require you to ferment the dough. However, if you have a dietary restriction such as a gluten intolerance or sensitivity you will find the best result is to always ferment the dough in any recipe even if it is not required.

Fermenting this dough requires about 6-8 hours on the countertop or 8-12 hours (overnight) in the refrigerator. This requires a lot of planning and prepping ahead of time but it is very doable.

Ingredients You Need for Sourdough Chicken and Dumplings

Here is a list of ingredients you will need for a quick and convenient overview of how to make these sourdough chicken and dumplings….

  • chicken breasts
  • salt
  • pepper
  • chicken broth
  • butter
  • all-purpose flour
  • sourdough starter
  • sugar/honey
  • baking powder

Sourdough Chicken and Dumplings From Scratch

A delicious spin off of a classic meal using sourdough discard.
Print Recipe Pin Recipe
Prep Time 20 minutes mins
Cook Time 25 minutes mins
Total Time 45 minutes mins
Course dinner, Main Course, Soup

Ingredients

Broth

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour heaping
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp pepper
  • extra seasoning to taste
  • 3-4 cooked and shredded chicken breasts

Dumplings

  • ⅓ cup sourdough discard
  • ⅓ cup water
  • 1½ tsp sugar or honey
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¾-1¼ cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • In a large pot cook chicken breasts on high heat until fully cooked (about 15-20 minutes).
  • Allow chicken to cool while melting butter on medium heat in a meium-large pot.
  • After butter melts, add all-purpose flour one tbsp at a time and whisk well to avoid sticking/burning. Add two cups of chicken broth and whisk until the butter/flour mixture (roux) is fully dissolved. Turn heat up to medium-high and continue to stir until the broth thickens. Add the remaining four cups of broth and allow to boil and thicken for about five minutes.
  • Cut or shred chicken and add to broth mixture as it is thickening.
  • After broth thickens and chicken is added turn heat to low. In a medium sized mixing bowl or bowl of a stand mixer combine sourdough starter and water.
  • Add sugar or honey, baking powder, salt, and ¾ cup of flour. Mix well. Add ¼ cup of flour until you get a thick ball of dough. The dough should be firm but pliable like a thick biscuit dough.
  • Roll dough out onto floured surface and cut with a cookie cutter into the shapes you prefer or roll into balls. (We prefer a more thin, noodle like dumpling that tends to cook more evenly and quickly.)
  • Turn heat back up to medium-high and bring back to a simmer/low boil. Add dough strips to boiling broth a few at a time and stir to keep them from sticking.
  • Once all the dough had been added cook for an additional 5-8 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

Have you been looking for an uncomplicated, easy to understand sourdough sandwich bread recipe? When I began making sourdough bread I found it extremely hard to find recipes that did not use big, complex terms, and require excessive measuring. Having been self taught I could not understand what they were saying and being a busy person I did not have the time to de-code all they were saying. After much trial and error I finally discovered a method that worked best for my busy life and was completely uncomplicated!

What is so great about this sourdough sandwich bread?

The art of sourdough has been around for thousands of years but has been lost to modern society. During the pandemic of 2020 it made a huge comeback and can now be seen everywhere on social media! But what is so great about this pretty bread everyone is making or is it just a fad that will eventually blow over?

While it most likely will blow over for many, those of us who enjoy making all our food from-scratch will continue to feed and maintain a starter every day. Here’s why…

Why We Will Be Making Sourdough Forever

  1. Because of the health benefits. All the good bacteria in sourdough it is extremely beneficial to the health of the digestive system. Those who have gluten intolerance can usually eat sourdough without having flare ups because of the way the gluten is processed during the making of sourdough versus other types of bread.
  2. Because we know where it comes from. Bread made right in our own kitchens gives us the peace of mind store-bought breads cannot. Even brands that claim to be “organic” or “all-natural” seem to add things in to preserve the bread. When we make it ourselves we can rest assured that every ingredient will be healthy and safe for our families.
  3. Because we love it! There are probably many more reasons I could list for why we will be making sourdough forever but to narrow it down, it is because we just enjoy making a quality loaf of fresh bread. You can too! It is so simple. Sourdough bread baking is really a form of art and you get to be the artist.

How do I know my sourdough starter is active?

On many sourdough recipes you will see the term “active” in regards to your sourdough starter. This simply means that you have fed your starter, it has doubled in volume, and it is bubbly. A good way to test this is to scoop out a little bit of starter and add baking powder to it. If the baking powder fizzes and expands, your starter is active and ready to go!

Why does my dough have to sit so long?

Another question I had when I began using sourdough was why does it have to sit or be refrigerated for eight hours in a lot of recipes? This process is called fermentation. That is what allows the good bacteria to be completely absorbed by your bread and for the gluten to break down. You do not have to let it sit this long in some cases but it is recommended.

The easiest time to let your dough ferment is at night when you are asleep or at the very beginning of the day. One of the more complicated things about sourdough is that you need to calculate the time it takes to make if you are wanting your bread by a specific time. Here is how I do this…

I count backwards. Let’s say I want a fresh loaf of sourdough bread done in time for supper at 7pm. I know that my bread normally take forty minutes to bake. No later than 6:20 it needs to be going into the oven. Then I will estimate the time it will take for the dough to rise, roughly two to four hours.

I will go with the longest amount of time. Therefore it needs to be rising around 2:20. This leaves my 8-12 hour ferment time anywhere from 2:20am-6:20am. I am likely not going to be up at 2:20 so I will either start it at 6:20 or, let it ferment longer than 12 hours. Longer fermenting is completely fine! I will never get out of bed at indecent hours just to make bread!

Do not let the clock become an obsession. Making bread is so fun but if you are stressing about timing and everything going by the books it will not be an enjoyable process. Just roll with it!

How long will my sourdough sandwich bread last and how to store?

This will depend on the humidity of where you live but the sandwich bread is freshest and tastes best when used within one week. I store our bread in a ziplock bag, making sure to let all the air out. Keep it in a cool, dry place like a bread box or in a cabinet.

sourdough sandwich loaf - little wife in the woods

Soft Sourdough Sandwich Bread Recipe

My go-to, everyday recipe for a soft and buttery sourdough sandwich loaf.
Print Recipe Pin Recipe
Prep Time 8 hours hrs
Cook Time 30 minutes mins
Total Time 8 hours hrs 30 minutes mins
Course bread
Servings 1 loaf

Equipment

  • 1 Bread Pan

Ingredients

  • 1 cup active, bubbly sourdough starter
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • ¼ cup salted butter melted
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 2-2½ cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Combine sourdough starter and warm water in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add melted butter, honey, and salt. Mix in one cup of flour by hand or on low speed with a stand mixer. Continue to add flour ½ cup at a time until dough is just slightly sticky but pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  • Allow the dough to ferment in the refrigerator for 8-12 hours or on the counter top for 4-6 hours. Cover with a damp towel for best results.
  • After fermenting, shape dough into a loaf and place in greased pan. Allow to double in size, takes about three-five hours. (Heat causes bread to rise so if you are having trouble getting it to rise you can heat your oven, turn it off, let it slightly cool, then place the bread in it to rise.) Cover the dough with a wet towel to keep the top of bread from getting dried out.
  • After dough has doubled, bake at 350℉ for 25-30 minutes or until top is golden brown.

How You Can Make a Difference

Have you ever desired to be a woman who makes a difference?

I have. Many times, as we think of making a difference, we remember those who accomplished some great deed for which they are forever remembered or those who made a positive impact on their world. Of course, as Christians, we think of accomplishing something for Christ that will make an eternal difference. We aren’t interested in the fame but rather in the impact that a life lived for Christ will make.  My point: we tend to think in terms of a one-time act or giant decision that makes a huge difference.

Eve’s decision to take a small bite of fruit was huge disobedience with eternal consequences.

As I have been studying the life of Eve, I have been reminded that it is often the little – seemingly insignificant – daily choices that have potential to make the biggest difference. We all know the story: Eve’s decision to take a small bite of fruit was a huge disobedience with eternal consequences. Her choice had an immediate effect in her own life, but the ramifications continued to her children and grandchildren. If only she could have gone back and made a different choice, she longed for the close fellowship she once had with the Lord. Life now held so much pain; Adam had to work so hard. Waves of anguish must have crushed her soul as she looked at Abel’s dead body and considered that his death and Cain’s becoming a murderer might have not happened. If only…

You see, daily decisions have huge difference – making potential.

So, I want to challenge us as wives and mothers, your daily life choices are making a difference. Your choice to have a daily walk with the Lord will impact your life, but it may also enable you to be a lighthouse to someone about to be shipwrecked, to have the discernment to speak “a word fitly spoken”.  Few children grow to be mature, Godly adults without loving, consistent discipline from a mother who chooses training over pleasure. Your decision to be a virtuous woman will reap the benefits of a healthy home and a happy husband. If at first you don’t succeed, repent, and try again. The rewards are worth the trouble!

Most of us will never be renowned for some great deed; but we can make a difference just by making godly choices every day.
